Pronunciation[edit]

Although the pronunciation of "Cao" is variously given as "Cow" and "Gow", I would caution against giving the IPA transcription as /gaʊ/. If anything, it should be /kaʊ/, because the Vietnamese "c" is equivalent to the IPA /k/. The reason many sources gloss his name as "Gow" is because the English "c" is aspirated, equivalent to the IPA /kʰ/ and similar to the Vietnamese "kh". See Vietnamese alphabet#Letter names and pronunciation. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 08:57, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For a close approximation, see Betty Nguyen's pronunciation in this interview with Cao on CNN. DHN (talk) 15:38, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, I'm not against including "Gow" in the article, just the IPA transcription, which would only be appropriate for a word like gạo. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 02:40, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well. it's definitely "Kao" (resembling "Cow" - maybe people wants to avoid this pronunciation analogy due to semantic reasons) but not "Gow". I'm a native Vietnamese speaker currently living in the US. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MinhV (talkcontribs) 18:45, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppet is attempting to have the Joseph Cao picture removed[edit]

Apparently, there is a sockpuppet that goes by the various names of Admitaside342 on Wikimedia Commons and Showwould40q on Wikipedia. In both places, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, Admitaside342 and his sockpuppet Showwould40q is arguing that there is an undefined copyright violation. Showwould40q attempted to begin a 3RR fight that I refused to participate in--even though he had already wrote me for the 3RR after merely placing the picture back in the article ONE. Both Admitaside342 and Showwould40q have ONLY edited three things in both of their entire editing careers with Wiki--Joseph Cao and Joseph Cao's picture. They both started their wiki careers in the last couple of days and they both seem to know how to complain to the Admin Notice Board and to have pictures taken down--specifically the Joseph Cao portrait that was specifically released by the Congressman's office. A Wikipedia admin has stated that he believes Showwould40q is a sockpuppet. I quote, "S's edit history is suspiciously short, presumably someone's sock." William M. Connolley (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)No Violation Decision. As to the substance of the claim, the picture has been specifically released by the Congressman's office. There is paperwork on file with the Wikipedia Foundation to refute the sockpuppet's claim. I just wish that the sockpuppet would come forward and explain who he is.--InaMaka (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You claimed that you have permission from Cao's office for the image that you uploaded. You should provide proof of that to prevent it being considered a copyright violation. DHN (talk) 02:41, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As I stated above I have an e-mail directly from Congressman Cao's office. When I posted the picture I forwarded a copy of the e-mail directly to the Wikipedia Foundation, as the posting instructions indicate. I still have that e-mail and the Wikipedia Foundation's response to my e-mail. How can I provide you with a copy of these various e-mails? And let me repeat that Showwould40q and Admitaside342 are sockpuppets of each other.--InaMaka (talk) 02:47, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, then that information should have shown up on the image's description. It is not necessary to send me a copy of the email. DHN (talk) 03:33, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I did get a response from the Wikipedia Foundation and they indicated that they believe the image is public domain. I can also provide that e-mail also. Cheers!--InaMaka (talk) 21:01, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting DHN, Hmm, looks like the questioning was, well, unfounded. Please review: VRTS ticket # 2009012310003551 --S Philbrick(Talk) 00:40, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, by the way, the sockpuppet has suddenly gone away and has not made any other edits. The sock only made two edits, but to get the picture pulled, which sock was unsucessful of course.--InaMaka (talk) 23:55, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Joseph Cao/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

== Initial article class == I've added |class=Start to all of the project templates. None of them had a class assigned yet. I figure it definitely isn't a stub anymore, but I'll let others decide if it deserves a higher rating.--Rockfang (talk) 10:12, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Vietnam[edit]

Maybe this is the wrong place to post my concerns about this, I'm still new to Wikipedia editing, but why is this a part of WikiProject Vietnam? Of course, Cao was born in Vietnam, but most of his life was spent in the United States, and the US was also when he entered politics. I suggest this shouldn't be a part of WikiProject Vietnam, as most of his contributions came in the United States, not Vietnam. TheBlueSkyClub (talk) 22:10, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
