Commission[edit]

As part of Shaftesbury's plotting to ring in the illegitimate Duke of Monmouth as dummy King, in the early 1670s when Monmouth was appointed commander of the army, Shaftesbury inveigled Williamson as Secretary of State to strike out the word Natural before Son in reference to his paternity, on the commission of Lord General.
