Assess : newly added and existing articles, maybe nominate some good B-class articles for GA; independently assess some as A-class, regardless of GA status.
Cleanup : * Sport governing body (this should-be-major article is in a shameful state) * Field hockey (History section needs sources and accurate information - very vague at the moment.) * Standardize Category:American college sports infobox templates to use same font size and spacing. * Sport in the United Kingdom - the Popularity section is incorrect and unsourced. Reliable data is required.
* Fix project template and/or "to do list" Current version causes tables of content to be hidden unless/until reader chooses "show."

It might be useful to note in which regions this term is known to be used (and this applies to other related terms, like varsity, of course). I am aware of it being used in at least some parts of the USA; I haven't heard it anywhere else. --Thedangerouskitchen 01:55, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, either this article is basically wrong, misleading, or there is major differences in the meaning of the term "junior varsity" in different areas. What I am familiar with, based on observations in several different states, is that varsity and JV teams are almost always totally separate entities, the JV are not the subs on the varsity team. Indeed, in some states the state federation limits the amount that any player can play on any given day. For example, it is not uncommon for a JV basketball player that played in all 4 quarters of the JV game to be not allowed to play at all in the following varsity game. In addition, many high schools field freshman, JV and varsity teams in several sports, with the freshman team being limited to freshman only; the JV team then commonly is sophmores and juniors, and the varsity usually being juniors and seniors; the better junior players get on the varsity, while those juniors whose skills and/or physical development are not so advances stay down on the JV team. I suppose it might be theoretically possible for a JV player to be promoted to the varsity team during the course of a season, but I have never heard of it. In addition, in some cases, a new school or one that adds a new sport often will only compete at the JV level for one or more years in order to develop while giving the teams more realistic competition.
