Kambah sounds like Canberra?[edit]

Hi, at present the article contains the assertion "Kambah sounds like Canberra." It doesn't really the way I hear most people say the two words. They quite possibly both derive from Ngambri. Perhaps, as to pronounciation, one of our fellow-editors who are more skilled in phonics over at Australian English can help. They woudl have needed to hear the words pronounced by Canberrans in my opinion though to provide meaningful help.--A Y Arktos 18:54, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An encylcopedia is not really a what's happening when. It whould be in the school web site, or possibly a newspaper. To make it to Wikipedia it should be something of more permanent interest like when was the school built or started, nature of buldings, classes, special subjects only found there. I think the word 'suburb' is too contentious for that assertion to be either justified or not. In the ACT, suburbs have no governmental status, whereas in most Australian cities, suburbs that have governmental status have suburbs of their own. Parramatta, for instance, is considered a suburb of Sydney, and it has many suburbs of its own. Parramatta is certainly bigger than Kambah, as are most such suburbs of Sydney, but because there is no municipal body for Sydney that has authority over such suburbs, there is even scope to debate whether places like Parramatta, Sutherland, etc., are suburbs of Sydney (although most residents of those cities would not entertain the thought for a moment that they aren't in Sydney). And then you also have places like Cabramatta, where there is 'Cabramatta' and 'Cabramatta West'. The two together are bigger than Kambah, and are part of Fairfield city council, but can they really be considered different suburbs when 'Cabramatta West' only exists because people like my grandmother didn't want to tell people they lived in Cabramatta?!?!
You could even argue that Kambah is not a suburb at all (although you would be laughed out of town), because there is no municipal level of government in the ACT.
The belief that Kambah is big stems purely from the fact that it was not laid down in the same way as the rest of Canberra. Every other suburb is bounded wherever a major arterial road passes, so that no arterials pass 'through' any suburb except Kambah.
Then you also have to define 'biggest'; are we talking about population or land area? I actually think (although I don't know) that there are probably suburbs of Johannesburg that beat Kambah on population but not area, and I understand that Rio has fewer suburbs than Canberra in a city bigger than Sydney. Then you could also argue that on population, Civic is bigger than Kambah between 9am and 5pm every day, and smaller than it at night!
There is room for debate, but I think that Kambah can only be the biggest suburb of Canberra, and only on land area.

removing it as it is closed school and the site is just a login for the website developing tools that the site used. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphamone (talkcontribs) 06:06, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aboriginal significance[edit]

I am kambino to the core and have only now learnt that 'KAMBAH' is an aboriginal word. I have always had the impression that it was but was not educated about my district in my schooling and believe this is a shame. I would like to know however by whom and when the area was first settle by europeans and I would also like to know anything about the local Aboriginals of the area up until the time of european settlement.

Any other historical facts would be greatly appreciated especially regarding the Allchin Circuit region of Kambah.

Thanks Squali
