Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved to the "XXXX railway station" format. No consensus on whether Lahore and Jacobabad should have "Junction" in the title and that should probably be the focus of a new RM. Jenks24 (talk) 11:05, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

– Originally proposed by Adnanrail (talk 15 February 2013 as "This article is about a railway station." Relisted by Tyrol5 [Talk] 23 February 2013. Per discussion below amended to include all others in Category:Railway stations in Pakistan that do not match predominant pattern by Skinsmoke (talk) 01:14, 25 February 2013 (UTC). Further amended per growing consensus to use lower case railway station. Skinsmoke (talk) 13:01, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. The article should really be named after the station. The station name seems to be Karachi City (from a first look at [1]). Hence either this should be the article name or if in place disambiguation is thought to be necessary it should be Karachi City (station) or Karachi City (railway station). Note that there should be lower case initial letters for 'railway' and 'station' since they are English words and not part of the name. Imc (talk) 08:12, 21 February 2013 (UTC) -I struck out my oppositon and changed my opinion to qualified support, see below[reply]
Support Pakistan Railways doesn't use words "Railway Station" with station names. But Peoples always use "Railway Station" with all stations name. Please check the List of railway stations in Pakistan and article related to railway station in Pakistan. Words "Railway Station" is using in all articles and its title. I think the title of this article should be "Karachi City Railway Station" like other articles and titles Adnanrail (talk) 01:23, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. Based on what Adnanrail says, the name should properly be simply the name of the station as given by PR. But this name needs to be disambiguated to distinguish it from other uses of Karachi City. Thus, I agree with Imc that the name should be Karachi City (railway station). But following the link provided by Adnanrail, I seems that there may be many stations which would need similar disambiguation. YBG (talk) 07:14, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I still oppose, but am recording my opposition at further down so my comments can be read in chronological order. YBG (talk) 04:54, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. There's unfortunately no global consistency with regard to the naming of station articles on Wikipedia, but there is a certain amount of consistency with regard to individual countries' stations. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations), for instance, suggests the form "X railway station" for UK mainline stations, and that convention is pretty much universally followed for such stations. For other countries, forms such as "X Station" or "X Railway Station" are prevalent. (I'm not aware of any countries for which "X (railway station)" is the norm, though there may be such.) In any event, as Adnanrail has shown, "X Railway Station" is, in practice, the form predominantly used for Pakistani stations, and I see no reason for this article to be an oddball in that context. I'll drop a note on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stations to see if the project's members have anything useful to add to this discussion. Deor (talk) 13:04, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I must disagree with Deor; looking at Category:Railway stations in Pakistan I see no consistency at all. We've got "X Station,", "X Railway Station," "X railway station" and just plain "X." I agree with Adnanrail that people probably use "railway station" when talking about one, but if it's not the official name then it definitely shouldn't be capitalized as part of the title. See WP:LOWERCASE. I would support a move to Karachi City railway station. Mackensen (talk) 15:25, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would probably support such a move myself if the proposal were to move all the station articles in Category:Railway stations in Pakistan to titles of that form (some of the articles in that category are about places containing stations rather than about the stations themselves). That requested move, however, isn't what's on the table here. And gaining a consensus for a Wikipedia-wide normalization of the naming of station articles—in the face of such mixed practices as can be seen at Category:Railway stations in Sweden (where "X Station" is certainly well represented), Category:Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia (even though Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Conventions#Rail transport terminology would call for the form "X station" for all), and most everywhere else—would require a centralized discussion at some place like WT:AT, which I don't see happening in the near future. It seems to me that the best that can be achieved at this time is some degree of consistency within individual countries' articles, and this article is the only one of the form "X Station" in the Pakistan category, so its current name certainly does stick out. Deor (talk) 19:18, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the current name is unacceptable. Should we table this discussion and have that one instead? I'm not sure where the appropriate venue would be, but you've got plenty of eyeballs right now :). Mackensen (talk) 19:35, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Qualified support - per Mackensen, a move to Karachi City railway station fits in with our naming convention for railway station articles. Mjroots (talk) 18:40, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Qualified support of move to Karachi City railway station. As stated above, this is not a proper name. You've got to have some naming convention and I really don't care what it is. For Pakistan it does seem to be upper case "Railway Station" and I really would not object to that either, just to be consistent. The other thing that pisses me of about railway station categories in Indian and Pakistan, is how many town/city articles there are under those classifications. Nobody seems to have come to grips with the entire railway station subject in this area. Secondarywaltz (talk) 19:10, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: The cities and towns that had been incorrectly categorised in Category:Railway stations in Pakistan have now been removed (why didn't someone else do this when they spotted it?). That leaves 24 articles, of which 17 are in the form XXX Railway Station, three in the form XXX railway station, one in the form XXX Station and three in the form XXX. Suggest we move the who lot to the predominant form XXX Railway Station. Move request amended to include others that do not match the pattern. Skinsmoke (talk) 01:16, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I can understand editors wanting to get a uniform international system in place but it will not happen, because of the various terms used by national varieties of English. Some countries refer to them as Railway stations, some as Rail stations, some as Train stations, some as Railroad stations, some as Railroad depots, and some simply as Stations. Any attempt to force these strongly held conventions into one uniform pattern will inevitably result in no consensus. Skinsmoke (talk) 01:26, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not interested in a uniform national system at this point; consistency within Pakistan is enough. I'm not familiar with any national variety of English that would capitalize "railway station" when it's not part of the name. Just because they're all currently capitalized doesn't mean that the usage is correct, or desirable. Mackensen (talk) 01:42, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I now support this proposal, based on the change to lower case railway station. YBG (talk) 05:22, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I have no problem with converting everything in the category to XXX railway station. I'm a bit occupied tonight, so would someone like to amend the proposal to that, and include the 17 others in the proposal. Skinsmoke (talk) 21:53, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Proposal now amended to bring whole category into XXX railway station format, as this seems to be the consensus preference. Skinsmoke (talk) 12:58, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Qualified support - I would still oppose the addition of 'railway station' to stations named something 'Junction' - these are almost always railway junctions and there will be nothing to confuse them with. Imc (talk) 13:27, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any objection to move these articles to "Xxx railway station". Junction railway stations should be move to "Xxx Junction railway station" or "Xxx Junction Railway Station" Adnanrail (talk) 19:59, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
