Difference in pronunciation[edit]

If both ข and ฃ are pronounced [kʰ] initially and [k] finally, why was the distinction even created to begin with? What kind of phonemic/phonetic distinction did they originally reflect? Siúnrá (talk) 18:32, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that the majority consensus is that there was a distinction that was probably lost around the 14th–15th centuries. The theory is that ฃ used to represent /x/, but became merged into ข in most Tai languages of the region.
