Tonal?[edit]

Yes, it is tonal, but it is not a language of Zimbabwe. It is only spoken in Angolan (unless among refugee populations in Zimbabwe or elsewhere). North Mbundu language → Kimbundu – The language spoken by the Ambundu is generally known as "Kimbundu" (language code kmb) rather than "North Mbundu language". "Kimbundu" is the more usual name, it is the name used in academic papers, and it matches the ISO 639-2 language code. Google scholar: 2,160 hits for "Kimbundu"; 6 hits for "North Mbundu". --Bejnar (talk) 04:17, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree entirely. I have been working on Angola for several decades, and (except for en:WP) have never ever come acress the expression "North Mbundu language"; it is always "Kimbundu" (as it is "Kikongo" for the Bakongo: in this part of Africa, "ki-" is the prefix used to form the designation of the language spoken by the respective people). -- Aflis (talk) 09:04, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: In Bantu languages in general, the "Ki", "Ka" or "Chi" prefix indicates language and the "Ba" prefix indicates people. So "Bakongo people" or "Kimbundu language" would be redundant and considered as poor form as "Rio Grande River" or "Sefid Rud River". Or course that has never stopped English speakers, we do have the classic Torpenhow Hill. --Bejnar (talk) 16:57, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
