Date Confusion[edit]

The date of death in the standard format on the right side of the page says he died at 58, but the Health and death section says he died a few months before his 60th birthday, which means he was 59. Which is true? Robigus (talk) 17:25, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If the listed birth and death dates are correct, the arithmetic would indicate that he was 58 years old at the time of his death (just shy of his 59th birthday). If he had lived, he would have celebrated his 60th birthday on 9 March 2004. Checking the various references listed for this article, the birth and death dates listed seem to be accurate. Cause of death[edit]

After talking about his “alcoholism," the entry says "Newell succumbed to the disease.” Alcoholism is not a cause of death, it is a diagnosis of behavior. Did he die of cirrhosis of the liver? Nicmart (talk) 04:05, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I modified this to reflect the source I examined that refers to his drinking problem. I cannot find any source that mentions a cause of death, so none is mentioned. A source says that he had chronic bronchitis, which suggests he was also a smoker, and this may have killed him rather than the adverse effects of heavy drinking. Personal life[edit]

I added some details from Newell’s obituary in the Toronto Globe and Mail, and I removed the assertion that he stole his first harmonica. The source provided didn’t mention a harmonica and the obituary says he purchased the harmonica at age 12. Nicmart (talk) 04:07, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
