Kirby Delauter is an American politician and businessman elected to the Frederick County, Maryland council in 2014, representing District 5.[1]

Frederick News-Post incident[edit]

Delauter was raised from relative political obscurity when, in a Facebook post, he criticized reporter Bethany Rodgers of the Frederick News-Post "for an unauthorized use of my name and my reference" in an article[2] published on Saturday, 3 January, 2015.[3] In the post, Delauter chastized the reporter for using Delauter's name in an article without his authorization. In a subsequent post, Delauter threatened the reporter with legal action by stating: "Use my name again unauthorized and you'll be paying for an Attorney. Your rights stop where mine start".[4] The paper's staff made light of the incident with an editorial published on January 6, 2015, that included Delauter's full name several times.[5]

Delauter's post went viral on the Internet. The incident has since received attention from the international press and has been the subject of articles in The Washington Post and BBC News.[6][7] Delauter apologized for his Facebook posts, characterizing them as "wrong and inappropriate" and affirming that "[t]he first amendment is alive and well in Frederick County".[8]
