Claims of second highest[edit]

There have been more than 9 boat lifts of this type constructed, and more than one had a higher rise. See Anderton_Boat_Lift and Lifts_on_the_old_Canal_du_Centre for examples. Martin451 (talk) 13:07, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These are not considered lift locks, but rather boat lifts. The government of Canada and resources Canada claim it as the second highest lift locks in the world, following peterborough. A boat lift is not the same as a lift lock (All lift locks are boat lifts, but not all boat lifts are lift locks). Could you explain when a boat lift is and is not a lift lock.

Also as I said above, the Anderton_Boat_Lift and Lifts_on_the_old_Canal_du_Centre are examples of hydraulic lifts which have higher lifts than Kirkfield. Martin451 (talk) 12:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If thats so then why did Canada Parks put that claim on the plaque (Which would have been installed probably during the 1960's reconstruction)?[1] I've always been told that the difference between the two is that a boat lift relies on external power (Which Anderton did in the 60's I suppose) or a moving track, where as a lift-lock is a hydraulic counterbalance system. However, the Lifts on the old Canal du Centre would qualify under that. When you compare the decents, Kirkfield is down the list a bit. It probably has the second highest lift in some very narrow definition written by Parks Canada. (In the same way that the owners of the London Eye claim that their observation wheel is the largest of its type). I would have said Parks Canada was unreliable for this claim (and possibly similar claims), but probably reliable for quantitative claim (e.g. the actual rise of the lock).
