The picture displayed here, apparently seen from the Wright Brothers Memorial is, in fact, in Kill Devil Hills. 2010-08-05 It has been for a long time. Kitty Hawk was a general name and the town was not incorporated as such until 1979 or 1980. Kill Devil Hills was incorporated as a township earlier, but I do not think that it was a township as such when the first flight occurred. I didn't think there was a specific name at the time, but other comments here, which I have no specific reason to doubt, seem to imply that there was a general regional name for Kill Devil Hills in 1903.

Kitty Hawk was chosen as a location- in addition to what is mentioned- because of its remoteness. The Wrights had very justified fears about being observed and having their inventions co-opted. The first powered flight actually happened in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The misconception that it was in Kitty Hawk arose from the Wright brothers telegram sent from the Kitty Hawk telegram office, the only one in the area. Also, the picture from the monument at the top of the page actually shows Kill Devil Hills. It should probably be replaced. This article should probably be removed from the wikiproject for aviation and be replaced by Kill Devil Hills

Hi! Everywhere I read the first flight was in Kitty Hawk. But the hill, where it happened, is located in Kill Devil Hills. So why is not Kill Devil Hills the place of the first flight? Henning Blatt (talk) 22:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Pictures

Neither of them are Kitty Hawk, they're Kill Devil Hills. I'm in Kill Devil Hills as I type this. I'm reluctant to leave the page with no images at all, but the ones here are completely inappropriate. Should I go up the road and photograph some random thing in Kitty Hawk? Maybe the 'Welcome to Kitty Hawk' sign.
