Paintings of "KONA LANES BOWL" sign

Usually, I'm reticent to link to pages with items for sale, but these paintings are powerfully illustrative of the fame of the sign; that and the sign's inclusion into the American Sign Museum are largely why KL merits an article in the first place. Okay, this is odd...

Google, Mapquest and Bing all show roughly the same satellite imagery of an undeveloped parcel at 2699 Harbor, copyrighted 2012 and 2013. Google Earth—a free download, but still a download—shows the early stages of construction as of April 2013. I'm going to change the phrasing from "the parcel remained undeveloped" to (I hope) the non-controversial "the parcel was still being developed" as we await newer, easily confirmed imagery. —ATinySliver | talk 18:24, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Interesting anecdote, if true...

... but there's nothing that argues that this is not merely apocryphal.

This article says:

"Long before the showdown between recreation-loving residents and Kohl's department store, Kona Lanes bowling alley on Harbor Boulevard was scheduled to be the spot of a national political showdown.

"In October of 1992, representatives of President George Bush, Bill Clinton and contender Ross Perot agreed to a bowl-off, of sorts, at Costa Mesa's very own Kona Lanes. The event was billed as 'Stars and Strikes Forever' but was dubbed the 'Perot Challenge' by the Texas billionaire's supporters because they were the first to accept the challenge.

"[The g]eneral manager at the time, Cherie Nagy, said she wasn't as concerned with the bragging rights of the best bowler, rather the entertainment of the event. She was quoted as saying, 'We could use a little levity in this election.' …

"Locals were looking forward to a lighthearted showdown that had nothing to do with the economy, unemployment or health care. The bowl-off offered the perfect venue but the representatives never showed.

"Perot's officials were ready to go, with their balls buffed and bowling shoes shined. Bush and Clinton campaign officials never did show and the rest is history."

I don't mean to cast aspersions on The Daily Pilot—which is cited heavily in Kona Lanes—or on Lolita Harper—who is not xD—but I can't find anything that corroborates this little anecdote. Update: the article's author does not recall having written it. (As a former journalist, I can vouch for that—especially if one has filed hundreds or thousands of stories over the years.) Roadside sign

A couple of blogs note that the "BOWL" portion of the sign collapsed at the American Sign Museum and could not be saved. All seem to trace back to a Tiki Central post that fails WP:RS. I've added "The larger 'BOWL' section did not survive the trip.", which I hope is sufficiently generic, since it's not part of the display. xD —ATinySliver | talk 22:18, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

One additional note in keeping with the reliability standards as required by any encyclopedia, this citation references this post by Tod Swormstedt, the founder and operator of the American Sign Museum. Peer review

My one significant concern is this: I've included pretty much everything I have found that would qualify for inclusion under policies governing notability and cruft, and yet the history section still strikes me as a bit thin for a venue with a 45-year lifespan. Maybe it's just me. xD

I read through some of the article, and the first thing I noticed was that I feel like the tone of the article is a bit much. For the type of article it is it's not too bad, but it does venture into "journalism-esque" language at times. For example, "Kona Lanes first opened its doors in 1958, enticing customers with the exotic styling and signage of post-World War II design influences." That's a bit much, especially without a source. Go through the article and tone it down a bit. Wizardman 18:34, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Looks a lot better now, so I gave it the full read-through now. Here's what I found:

• A nitpick, but it feels like the lead is overreferenced. Since it's supposed to be a summary, that many shouldn't be needed. The lead all appears to be noted later though, so simply removing the redundant ones will suffice.
• "one of three designed and built at around the same time by Powers," rm at

Overall the copyedit helped a great deal, as it's mostly ready to go now. Article is now on hold and I'll pass when the above is fixed. Wizardman 23:27, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, per BRD. I do not argue with the assessment—quite the opposite, I fully agree with it. My argument was and was only that such an assessment be proper and inarguable. It's the same issue as with an IP editor making assessments; it is not incorrect to question whether a rating is arbitrary, absent evidence to the contrary. —ATinySliver/^ATalkPage 🖖 11:07, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

To Fronticla, Hack, Howenstein115 and/or anyone else interested, my US$0.02 as this article's primary author: in the grand scheme of bowling, this would have rated "low-importance" to me, except that the street sign was considered so iconic that it was one of the first couple dozen signs accepted for display in the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati.
