Dogs barking to Echo, and Echo "targetted"

The (unreferenced) story of Korabl-Sputnik 2 deliberately "targetting" the US Echo satellite is unlikely, as there was a serious difference in orbital altitude between the two: Echo orbitted some 1200-1500 km higher above earth surface (or 5 times as much as Korabl-Sputnik 2 itself) than Korabl-Sputnik 2 did!

The event with the barking of the two dogs is described by Chertok (https://books.google.nl/books?id=Jf-odeaeoqkC&lpg=PA766&ots=ugbgT15XK2&dq=korabl%20sputnik%202&hl=nl&pg=PA47#v=onepage&q=korabl%20sputnik%202&f=false), but in his story of the event it happened several orbits later, at overflight of Thyura-Tam that coincided with an Echo overflight (this occurred near 16:44 UT). That it supposedly happened at the second orbit and was recorded by radio is highly unlikely, as that (very loose: 1396 km range) approach between the two spacecraft at 9:54:45 UT on the 2nd orbit (or rather end of the 1st) happened over the southern Atlantic where there was no radio contact (radio and TV contact was only possible during overflights of groundstations in Russia).

So, I'd say this story is very apocryphal and should be either marked as such, or removed.

Are you absolutely sure that "Strelka" means "Little Arrow" or "Pointer"? I'm fluent in Russian, and I know that "Strelka" could mean either of these things, but could also stand for "railway switch" (cf. "strelochnik" (switchman)). Lisichka (Chanterelle)

The primary meaning of "лисичка" is "little fox", and the mushroom is named so for its similar color, so the dog was most probably named in allusion to the animal rather than the mushroom. — Mikhail Ryazanov (talk) 20:41, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
