Greek place names of slavic origin[edit]

Kozani is not the only town whose name is possibly of Slavic origin. There are Greek places outside Macedonia that have names of Slavic origin. The most notable examples are:

  • Χελμός, the ancient Aroania (Αροάνεια), from south slavic хълм = montain
  • Αράχωβα, from south slavic орах = walnut Andreas 17:42, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of the name[edit]

There are no sources for the various theories of the etymology of the name.  Andreas  (T) 02:06, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you don't need "a source" for something, that is deadly obvious for any Slav. I.E. the Greek famous name "Zagori" means in Greek nothing, but in Slavish languages (even in the very northern Polish) it perfectly fits "that places, which are behind the mountains". And the Zagori region is really behind the mountains, if you look from the North side. /Dimitris, Poland+Greece --46.176.113.214 (talk) 17:03, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Population[edit]

So long as we are talking about the city of Kozani, I think we should be looking at the city's population, standing at 38.591 according to the included source, and not the broader municipality, which includes villages and towns altogether outside of the Kozani metropolitan area. If no one objects, I am thinking of changing the stats to reflect this.

Fair use rationale for Image:Kozaniseal.jpg[edit]

Image:Kozaniseal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:23, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

In regards to the South Slavic etymology, "Koza" means goat, and "Koža" means skin. It is called "Kožani" in Slavic so I don't believe the reference to goat is correct, although goatskin or just "skin" (as in leather) makes sense. Correct me if I'm wrong. Using HNMS instead of Weatherbase as a source for climate data[edit]

I just changed the climate table to use Template:Weather box and switched to using the data from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service instead of Weatherbase. I noticed Weatherbase supplies data for extremes and the HNMS does not, but decided not to use Weatherbase as a second source for the extremes. Template:Weather box stresses that "record temperatures should be used sparingly in main city articles, and should only be used when the data period is of the greatest length possible". Weatherbase doesn't mention the years of its extremes measurements so I thought including them was not a good idea. --AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 14:42, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TEI[edit]

2a02:587:4418:4e70:c0be:2e68:a9e1:a01e (talk) has removed the link to the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia, saying that it has merged with the University of Western Macedonia, and so only the latter needs to be mentioned as they are now the same thing. The TEI article says nothing about this. It seems to have a separate website still, and continues to call itself in some places the TEI of Western Macedonia. Even if they are legally merged in some way, it seems that they are still not exactly the same thing. The Wikipedia article on University of Western Macedonia doesn't seem to give any information about the TEI. So for now I suggest that it's best to leave the links to both articles, unless and until the articles are merged, rather than simply deleting any mention of the TEI. --IamNotU (talk) 14:07, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
