The original article said Kris was a son of the noted broodmare Doubly Sure. Well, she wasn't noted when she produced Kris as he was her first foal.. So I changed it to ....,eventually, noted: this was next deleted which I am happy with. In fact Doubly Sure was so 'not noted' at the time of her covering by Sharpen Up that De Walden said 'we didn't know what to do with her so sent her to a cheap fast sire down the road'. Sharpen Up was at that time standing at £200 a nomination I believe. In fact Doubly Sure was lucky to be in his stud. The only reason was that her dam (the beautifully bred, champion 2yo filly Soft Angel) was proving difficult to get into foal (she only had 4) and the filly they had retained had died. Hence the very slow, non-winning Doubly Sure was retained (she received a Timeform rating of 55). She turned out to be a noted mare. She also made Sharpen Up, though Sharpo would have done it to some degree a few years later. (Victor Middlesex (talk) 02:31, 21 July 2014 (UTC)).[reply]

I just rephrased your edit: you were absolutely correct to challenge the "noted broodmare" phrase. Where does the Howard de Walden quote come from? Is it from a book or newspaper interview? If we have a source we can add it to the article. Tigerboy1966  05:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Tigerboy, I've only got some of my literature with me as I'm overseas (and will be for sometime) at the moment. From memory the quote was in a newspaper or something like the Horse and Hound in 1979. As the article was originally written it gave an incomplete impression of Kris's worth. Even after his first race the quote in the Sporting Life from Paddy Rudkin was 'we've got plenty better at home'. Even after winning his 4 races Cecil was asked at the end of the season by John Rickman in a book he wrote 'what were his best 3yos for next year' and he mentioned 5 colts without mentioning Kris. Kris was never really rated until he won the Greenham and even then he was still underrated.(Victor Middlesex (talk) 04:40, 22 July 2014 (UTC)).[reply]

OK have the reference. It is Earls Have Peacocks (The Memoirs of Lord Howard de Walden) by Lord Howard de Walden on page 131 (ISBN 1 8699812 09 Parameter error in {{ISBN}}: checksum 3) (Victor Middlesex (talk) 17:00, 28 December 2016 (UTC)).[reply]

National Hunt[edit]

Just looking back over the sources, I completely overlooked that, bizarre a it may seem, Kris was an excellent sire of jumpers. Will add detail soon. Tigerboy1966  21:29, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
