The available recordings[edit]

The only commercial recording of the Kronstorfer Messe, which we are aware of, is that of the Finnish Boys-choir Pirkanpoja (conductor Jussi Kauranen): Tuhansin Kielin (1998) - item 19: Anton Bruckner's Messe ohne Gloria und Credo

In 2012, when going through the collection of producer David Aldeborgh, John Berky came across a cassette containing a live performance of the Kronstorfer Messe, as it was performed in Kronstorf on 20 May 1987, and saved it in the Bruckner archive: CD - Charter Oak COR-1684. This live performance (presumably a rehearsal) by the Kirchenchor Kronstorf (conductor Erich Nowotny) can be heard on John Berky’s website.

Thereafter, another live recording by Bert Brandstetter with the Choirs of the churches of Freistadt District in 1996, has been also retrieved in Aldeborg's collection. The recording is put in the Bruckner Archive: CD - Dutch Dragon HR 750.

During the celebrations of Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday (2017), Michael Stenov conducting the Cantores Carmeli of Linz performed Bruckner's Kronstorfer Messe. He has put a recording of it, together with a performance of the Christus factus est, WAB 9 and two other pieces on YouTube.

PS: Stenov let me in the meantime know that he will try to perform the Messe für den Gründonnerstag during the Maundy Thursday celebration of next year. --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 13:08, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Review of the available recordings[edit]

  • E. Nowotny (1987): live performance from Kronstorf; low quality recording, mainly during the Kyrie; drift during the Agnus Dei, with on bar 41 (alto voice) D instead of D♭.[1]
  • B. Brandstetter (1996): live performance from the Dekanat Freistadt; better recording quality; better performed, well with also a drift during the Agnus Dei. On Hans Roelofs' CD - Dutch Dragon HR 750
  • J. Kauranen (1998): out-of-print studio recording from Finland; acceptable performance; boys voices well often shrill and uneven.[2]
  • M. Stenov (2017): good live performance, well with disturbing background noise.[2] Available on YouTube and IMSLP
  • S. Klava (2019): good quality studio recording from Latvia. The current reference recording of the Kronstorfer Messe
  • R. Siyana (2023): beautiful live performance from Russia. Available on YouTube
