2nd woman?

The article says "Ball's candidacy is also notable in that she would be only the 2nd woman in Virginia history to ever serve in US Congress", but Thelma Drake and Leslie Byrne are both women — as was Jo Ann Davis, who when she died in 2007 was serving the the very seat that Krystal Ball is running for, so one might think she'd have heard of her.

I don't think congressional candidates who haven't yet been nominated (and may have no chance of being nominated) are generally considered notable in Wikipedia. —KCinDC (talk) 07:09, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

How old is she?

Article says she was born in 1981. (Citation is an old Clemson athletic web page—can't we do better?) Then, under Early Life and Education, it says the subject was "born during the Great Depression." Several Sections are violations

Much of the Krystal Ball article is -magazine style, - not encyclopedic, - argumentative, - original research, - not objective - biased

This page is full of "campaign time" problems. Although there are sections that are objective, there are also several that are simply a "campaign negative ad". I'm not involved in the campaign. I just wandered in and I'm new to Wikipedia so I don't have the time or experience to catalog the problems or fix them. Is there someone with more experience who can fix this up?? Your help would be appreciated. I just want to delete the offending sections but I don't think that's the way to do it. Gcherrits (talk) 16:31, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Glenn


Most things associated with Ball are "campaign time" points. There's an entire section devoted to her political positions--something not normally of interest for a random individual. As for the specific sections in question, the fraudulent campaign mailers are something that the local media has drawn attention to and hammered her for (check the cited reference). It includes claims she often cites (just check her webpage). And it is of important note, as her entry here exists solely on the basis that she is a congressional candidate.

Campaign donors -- what's wrong with this? It's a fact about her campaign and support base. Wittman's numbers beside it add context as to what is being experienced in the region. Gail "For Rail" Parker appears to not have readily available campaign finance information, otherwise I would lobby for it to be included as well to further the context. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.245.105.112 (talk) 01:30, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

What's wrong with this section is that there's no reason it should be included on the page. There's no citation of a public issue or dispute, only a citation of the funding data. Why is it here? Why not also include any number of other analyses of the candidates funding sources and funding in general? I'd like to point out that if there must be a citation of public issue or dispute for it to remain on the page, we also need to delete her professional and academic histories as well as personal life information. Who's disputing her hometown? No one? Well then let's delete that as well! ...This was a fact about the candidate. Granted the page is locked so it's a moot point for now, but if we delete everything that's deemed to not be a public issue or dispute, there would be a great deal less data on wikipedia. As for your last sentence, I've never seen opensecrets.org referred to as making poorly sourced controversial claims, but I'd love to see any data you have on that.

I'm removing the misleading mailer section too. The only source cited for the "misleading mailer section" is an unsigned piece on fredricksburg.com. That piece has been heavily commented on by people questioning its neutrality and objectivity. I've removed this: "The same paperwork also raised suspicions on conservative blogs of pump and dump fraud based on the penny stocks listed and her family's associations with those companies.[8][9] This is an unsubstantiated accusation using the loaded words "pump and dump fraud"." No legal action has been brought and although an investigation was requested by one legislator, no investigation has not been started. The claim of fraud isn't even mentioned in the citation on the page. No, unsigned, I have no interest at all in the campaign, I only found the page because I was googling the viral photos. I found a page that was rife with poorly source argeumentative, smearing electioneering. I was shocked. To tell you the truth, I don't even know whether I agree with ms Balls politics. I do support wikipedia and its objective encyclopedic neutrality though.

This misleading mailing piece only appears in one source and that seems to be an opinion/letter to the editor piece. There is no by-line and it's unclear under what heading it first appeared. The online instance of the piece is heavily commented with challenges of its objectivity . For reference, here's a similar piece from the site where it appears -- fredricksburg.com. This piece looks very similar, with a similar url and has no by line -- http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2010/102010/10222010/583314. It's pure opinion/letter to the editor. I'm removing the section again. It's clearly an undersourced attack on a living individual, lacks objectivity, and therefore violates wikipedia guidelines. Notability

This woman is not notable under any interpretation of the rules of notability. There are serious BLP issues also involved here. I believe that this article needs to be merged into the article on the 2010 Virginia Congresional elections.--InaMaka (talk) 15:31, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Good question, since you obviously don't know the answer. Just being a candidate does NOT "confer notability". That's a fact. Please review Notability for Politicians. Under Wikipedia rules she actually has to get elected to Congress, the state house, dog catcher, something, anything, which she has not done. She is not notable. Businesswoman?

This is how she is introduced, but there is no discussion of her business activities. They do seem relevant to other aspects of her career. This is a link to a politically hostile article, but the hard data seem to be correct.

Malaysian Airlines plane crash

Krystal Ball was pranked live on air during her coverage of the Malaysian flight crash in Ukraine — with an apparent fan of shock jock Howard Stern posing as a military expert.

“Let’s turn now to an MSNBC exclusive. U.S. Staff Sergeant Michael Boyd, he is at the U.S. embassy in Ukraine and he says he saw a missile in the air hit the plane, he is on the phone with us,” Ball said.

"I was looking out the window and I saw a projectile flying through the sky, and it would appear that the plane was shot down by a blast of wind from Howard Stern's ass," the caller said.

Ball continued her questioning. "So it would appear that the plane was shot down. Can you tell us anything more from your military training of what sort of missile system that may have been coming from?" she asked.

"Boy you're a dumbass, aren't ya?" came the reply.

Sources: A youtube video and a AP story that doesn't mention Ball

The AP source is being used to describe the People's House Project. If we're going to say that Ball was the director of a PAC called the PHP, we need to either link to a dedicated article (which doesn't exist yet) or add some reliably sourced text about what the PHP has done. The video we cite is much better than other stuff on YouTube since the person conducting the interview is a journalist best known for his collaborations with a Pulitzer Prize winner. If that's not enough and you think it's better to avoid youtube.com sources no matter what, I'm fine with that. Connor Behan (talk) 21:31, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Feminism + Photo

I've added category:American feminists with a 2020 Rising video as source, also for the WikiProject Feminism here. That source should be improved (older, and more specific, e.g., "postmodern" or "sex-positive" feminism, if possible.)
While at it I added the Journalism and Women projects here upgrading class=start to class=C as on Kim Iversen, i.e., has photo + has infobox. For the photo I requested a {{Crop for Wikidata}} on Commons, a fresher free photo would be better. –84.46.53.116 (talk) 11:52, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Really? The only BLPs I can find that have the feminism portal and WikiProject Feminism are people like Gloria Steinem who have devoted their entire careers to it. I agree with having Krystal Ball in Category: American feminists but the other inclusions are borderline misleading. Connor Behan (talk) 00:05, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
