Regarding names[edit]
This public library is known by the following names in Malay:
- Perpustakaan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Kuala Belait
- Perpustakaan Kuala Belait
- Perpustakaan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Daerah Belait
- Perpustakaan Daerah Belait
Perpustakaan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Kuala Belait is the current formal name, as used in the website of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei.[1] However, the shorter name Perpustakaan Kuala Belait is also used, as in the website [1]. Both websites are government websites (they use the domain gov.bn)
There are no clear or sufficient examples in the local nor foreign formal media of its English name(s). Therefore, the only way to determine this, especially for the page title of this article, is through translating the Malay name. I have decided to use the English translation of Perpustakaan Kuala Belait (i.e. Kuala Belait Library) as this page title as it is most convenient and satisfactory – 'Kuala Belait Library' is an exact translation but without compromosing the common nuance of its original Malay name. Nevertheless, the Malay names are made redirect pages. However, it is difficult to determine the suitable translation for the formal name – the translation for Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka is 'Language and Literature Bureau' but the English translation is rarely used. Also, there are insufficient examples of how it should be translated – it could be 'Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library, Kuala Belait', 'Kuala Belait Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library' or 'Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Kuala Belait Library' but neither of them seem satisfactory or in line with Wikipedia convention on page titles.
The library might also have been known with the place name 'Daerah Belait' substituting 'Kuala Belait' of those formal and shorter names (see the title page of [2]). Before the establishment of Kampong Pandan Library and Seria Library, Kuala Belait Library served the whole of Belait District, hence this function might be reflected to the library name at one time.
