Expansion[edit]

Thanks for starting the article on a very important artist. I started expanding and saved an intermediate version with additional sources. Would be nice to get books on him. There were at least 3-4 published. Also, I could not find his image. --Irpen 01:12, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove that he was a "Ukrainian painter"? This does not seem like something that could be disputed. Ostap 23:37, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because some sources call him a Russian painter while some call him a Ukrainian painter. So, we should either say that different sources consider him either a Russian or a Ukrainian painter or just avoid such an assertion and only present facts. And facts are that he was a son of Greek immigrants in what was then New Russia, lived and worked most of his life in Odessa that is now part of Ukraine and took part in the Peredvizhniki group which is considered a Russian artistic movement. To pay tribute to both claims, I gave his name in both languages but avoided assertions that contradict reputable sources even if sources that assert it are also reputable. If you think it is crucial, we should mention that different sources call him either way. But I don't think we need to clutter an article to elaborate on such trivial issue if all facts are not disputed anyway. It is much simpler to just state facts and avoid assertions that are disputable. BTW, I had too little time fow the WP lately. So, while I wanted to expand on his bio, I could not get to it yet. I added some sources that give information that should be integrated into an article. If anyone does it before I get to it and destubs the article, don't forget to sumbit it to DYK. --Irpen 01:59, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
