Original La Presse[edit]

There remains a need for an article on the first daily newspaper "La Presse" published in Paris beginning in 1836 - and a disambiguation page to distinguish the two.

I think that the Montreal-based La Presse should be primary topic... Montreal is an English and French city, so usage in English would be mostly this paper.
Given the French La Presse went bankrupt in 1927, the focus should remain on the Montréal newspaper Lexers615 (talk) 12:51, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment[edit]

I have assessed this as Start Class, as it contains more detail and organization than would be expected of a Stub (although it requires more referencing and in-line citations), and of low importance, as it a highly specific topic within Canada. Cheers, CP 15:08, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:LaPressePage.jpg[edit]

Image:LaPressePage.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Cyberpresse webpage[edit]

I'm wondering whether the external link should be http://www.cyberpresse.ca/, which actually covers all Gesca newspapers in Quebec, or http://www.cyberpresse.ca/section/CPPRESSE, the La Presse section of the website. Or should we keep the link as is and rename it as Cyberpresse instead of the somewhat misleading "official website"? Any opinions?--Boffob (talk) 18:14, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

La Presse (Canada)La Presse — This is a major newspaper in a major city with a large English population, and is referred to by English press from the rest of Canada. It is primary usage. — 70.51.10.188 (talk) 09:21, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support The above rationale is insufficient because it fails to address the claim of the French newspaper. For example, Le Monde, the French newspaper correctly gets primary topic over Le Monde (song) which appears to come from an English-speaking region. In this case however, La Presse has had about 5 times fewer hits. [1] vs. [2]. --Rogerb67 (talk) 20:05, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Any additional comments:

Is the French newspaper even in circulation? The article mentions in the "External links" there are digital archives from 1836 to 1906, but the article is ambiguous about whether this newspaper is still published. If the newspaper has been out of circulation for over 100 years, the Quebec newspaper is more convincingly the main article. — Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 13:59, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect the date approximately 100 years ago has more to do with expiry of the copyright in France than any end of publication; the archive now appears to go up to 1910. However, whether it has gone out of print in the intervening 98 years is an open question; applying my limited knowledge of French to the French Wikipedia article didn't help either. Whether the paper is still in print possibly has some bearing on which is the primary article, but it certainly doesn't determine the case. --Rogerb67 (talk) 20:35, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed a header on the archive La Presse (Paris. 1836). 1836-1952.; possibly a final publication date? As noted above, this does not cause any presumption against the newspaper in France; discontinued publications can still be more well-known than current ones. --Rogerb67 (talk) 21:43, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I was careful not to say that being in print implies it is more notable. According to this (found via [3]), La Presse ceased publication in 1938. The articles do seem to suggest this was an important newspaper, however. — Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 17:43, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, and according to the French Wikipedia, the French newspaper bearing the same name went bankrupt in 1927 after a scandal for publishing false news... Lexers615 (talk) 12:51, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

L'Express[edit]

La Presse appears to have ties to the French newspaper L'Express, given that it often runs articles from the newspaper, although it would be best to find accurate sources about this before making such a claim. ADM (talk) 11:48, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
