You Can't Be The Story

Reporters can not be the story. What went on here is the same as politicians changing their entry or the entry of their opponents, or any two opposing factions yelling at each other from across a table. An encyclopedia entry on iraq for example should be written neither by saddam hussein nor george bush. leave it to the UN, or wikipedians, as the case may be.

If we chronicled every uproar at every high school there would be 10 times as many wikipedia articles. should we have made an entry for when la salle banned smoking on campus too? should the harvard university entry log every protest ever made on their campus? should we let Al Gore write the entry for the 2000 Pres. well i certainly agree with you here, but this becomes interesting because it is the first unique incident dealing with a school and a wikipedia entry in terms of the discipline context. In that facet, it is truely landmark and somewhat remarkable. If you were not paying attention to the whole debacle while it was unfolding I could understand how you missed out. I would agree with the argument that "you can't be the story" until such time as reliable outside sources start picking it up. For example, if the major Philadelphia newspaper(s) wrote (or write) an article about it, then that potentially becomes suitable fodder for the article. Otherwise, you risk violating not only journalistic principles, but also Wikipedia policies such as no original research. Even then, of course, there would be need to consider the guideline that says Wikipedia should not reference itself in articles; however, there are precedents for exceptions, such as in the articles about The Colbert Report and Colbert's encouraging WP vandalism in the name of "wikiality." what this article is missing

School Enrollment Information

Although the school enrollment information is not publicly posted on the school website, it seems important to post the most current numbers given by school administrators. The information that was updated for the current school enrollment by class is being provided through me by the sjchool at the request of the administration. Secondary sources are preferred. NCES is a good place to find them. The source you provided is more in the line of an internal document rather than a published source. You need to be very clear on something: This is NOT the school's page on Wikipedia, it is Wikipedia's page on the school. It is not a vehicle for the school to post information. It is an encyclopedia article ON the school. All but the most mundane info (think address) must come from reliable published sources not connected to the school in any way. Any information that does not conform to this standard is subject to removal at any time. That covers most of the information in this article. Further, there are guidelines for content for school articles. (WP:SCH/AG) Lacking some compelling reason otherwise, this article needs to conform to those too. It doesn't. It will soon. Thanks for your help and clarification on the matter. Second, I apologize for any misunderstanding we might have had. I am in complete agreement that most of the information on this page has read as promotional instead of encyclopedic fact. In terms of this Wikipedia page, I am much more concerned with what the verifiable facts are than what is acceptable to the Church. My interest in updating the enrollment statistics was simply to provide more details to the page, not to pollute the data it contained. I certainly understand the need for concrete data and sourcing and will make sure my future edits to any page keep this in mind. Pool Mass Controversy

Looks like there is an imminent edit war about to spark over the Pool Mass Controversy. The school has been reverting edits in an effort to remove the content. A discussion has been opened at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Sockpuppetry_and_COI_Edits over the matter.

I do believe such content should remain and is well-supported. To address Mr. Biddulph's concerns, the first source was added in order to demonstrate how such a Mass was in violation of Canon 932.1, which was a concern of AdventurousSquirrel. Additionally, despite being "blogs" many other very heavily visited and circulated Catholic media outlets covered this event. See: [1], [2], [3], 70.192.131.83 (talk) 04:10, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

• IP, I appreciate the note on my talk page and your engagement here, but this is rather serious business. "Such a Mass is part of a litany of religious problems that have plagued the school, including accusations of lax teaching and catechesis by alumni and rampant acceptance of homosexuality on campus"--a huge statement like that cannot stand if it is only supported by a post on a blog. The links you give above do not, as far as I can tell at first glance, meet the definition of WP:RS. Extraordinary content requires extraordinary sourcing. Thank you. • The reason for the removal of the content is simple. No official Catholic newspaper ever covered this story as claimed. The only coverage it received was in several (not many) ideologically biased blogs and privately produced news programs not associated with any diocese or religious institute and without any official church standing. Additionally, no one making this claim has demonstrated the credentials or authority to make canonical judgments. The post is based on a layman's interpretation of a canon, which has the same validity as a layman's interpretation of a civil statute. Braden.bonner (talk) 21:53, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
• Likewise, I appreciate the notification on my talk page and discussion here, but much of the addition was not backed by the presented sources, and that which was wasn't supported convincingly. WP:QUESTIONABLE sources don't have a good reputation for fact-checking and often push a particular point of view that's not appropriate to include in an encyclopedia. And as Drmies points out, some of the claims made can be considered quite vitriolic and would require some pretty significant support from reliable sources to be published here. Possible COI

Being fairly new at this I realized that my edits to this page may be a conflict of interest as I am a La Salle alum. As you will see, nearly all of my contributions, with the exception of a link update, have been to add alumni to the notable alumni section who already have existing pages, and therefore clearly met notability standards.
