pre-roman settlement[edit]

Some local people believe that the original pre-Roman settlement was about half a mile to the south of the present town, at the top of the hill at the crossing of a section of north-south road which became part of the Roman Watling Street and an east-west cattle drovers road (now a minor road called 'cow pastures'), and that there was a small trading post type of settlement there from which the name Lactodorum is derived.

I have no written citation for this information, but heard of it in the first place at a meeting of the town council. Since then, I've heard it given credence by various inhabitants of the town. Personally, I think that it is true, as it accords with the present town being called Towcester (from the Roman camp), and from what I understand of Roman camp-building, the Roman army were unlikely to have built their camp in place of an existing settlement, preferring 'green field' sites.
