Searching for the origin of land ownership, I found the statement, "In order to legitimize the notion of the Crown's paramount lordship, a legal fiction (my emphasis) - that all land titles were held by the King's subjects as a result of a royal grant - was adopted", at the end of the first paragraph of this article.

The statement is relevant when discussing John Locke's arguments about an individual's right to free access to land in order to satisfy his needs by investing his own labour. In turn, it is relevant to the modern problem of land speculation based on that updated fiction of private ownership over parts of (unimproved)nature. Speculation in land (holding land off the market in the expectation of future price rise) is the major factor that prevents the operation of a free market in land.

PS I started this page in the hope that some fair-minded editor might help to located references and citations (which I know from my extensive readings as existing) in compliance with Wikipedia guidelines.
