Medal tables by games[edit]

There are some misleading information in the section medal tables. This article is called "Latvia at the Olympics", and the lead has a link to the country Latvia and a link to the Latvian Olympic Committee. The tables though seems to render an unsourced understanding of when and how Latvia gained medals at the Olympics. Latvia did not exist until 1918, and Latvia did not have an olympic committee until 1922. The Latvian Olympic Committee did not exist in the years from 1940 to 1991, it was suspended by the Soviet Union. Latvia did not participate at the Olympics represented by other states at any point of time in Olympic history. I would like to remove these unsourced claims, and will do so if noone objects. As per other similar cases, it is correct to have the table as it is because Latvian athletes participated as part of the USSR. As did many other republics. Jmj713 (talk) 01:10, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The table would be correct if the title of the article was Latvians at the Olympics (as in Latvian people at the Olympics). As the article is about the sovereign state of Latvia and its national olympic committee, it would be correct and neutral point of view to have the text: "Latvia did not exist" and "Latvian Olympic Committee did not exist" Other republics might have had a different situation.
I would welcome another article on Latvians at the Olympics, since there are Latvian athletes that competed under a different flag than the Latvian flag, an example would be Ilsa and John Konrads. Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 08:26, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that is not how these tables are structured. That is why I would like to change how they are structured. The tables should reflect facts in a neutral point of view. Context is given in the lead of the article, where Latvians competing under other flags are mentioned. The tables gives the misleading impression, that Latvia was represented "as part of the Soviet Union, or Russian Empire". Do you have any thoughts on my rationale? The table structure is long-standing consensus so you would need to bring it up for discussion over at the WP:OLY project. And yes, Latvia was part of the Soviet Union during that period of time. Jmj713 (talk) 13:46, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But they did not represent Latvia, did they? They represented the Soviet Union. May I propose a change in the text from "as part of the Soviet Union ... Russian Empire" to "Latvian sportspeople attended the team of the Soviet Union" or "Latvian sportspeople attended the team of the Russian Empire"? Or something similar, perhaps shorter phrasing. But that's the thing, I think the current phrasing is concise and not POV at all. There is no need to include a history lesson in table meant to glean information quickly. Well, that is of course an opinion, your opinion. I think it is a sloppy phrasing open for misunderstandings. It would also be sloppy if we just labeled everything Russian. So, we do practice history lessons every time we distinguish between the different political eras. We should, in all fairness, also distinguish between the different polititical eras of Latvia.
