Etymology of name[edit]

According to my family oral history, my great-uncle Lazarus Rayman was a high-ranking official in the British High Commission in Singapore in the 1930s/40s, in charge of the treasury. It is said that, fearing the Japanese invasion, he took steps to move the colony's gold reserves and thereby save them from falling into enemy hands. After the War (which he spent in Changi as a POW) he was honoured in various ways, including having a park named after him (though that park has now been built on). I don't know for sure but it seems possible that this island was also named in his honour.
