CamelCase discrepancy[edit]

LeRoy/Leroy Township's website seems to use "LeRoy" most of the time, but, for instance, the Roads & Service department page uses "LeRoy" until the last paragraph, "Mail-Box Policy Resolution (effective 12/29/08)", where it uses only "Leroy" twice. FYI, the Census Bureau uses Leroy. I'm in favor of going with "LeRoy", primarily because it's used more by locals, AFAIK. Nyttend (talk) 14:38, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity, I drove through the township today. Most instances of the name were all caps; where it was different was a sign on the township hall, which said both "LeROY" and "LeRoy", and the sign at the driveway to the township garage by I-90 Exit 205, which said "LEROY". This I suppose could be the deciding factor; however, I just looked at http://www.leroyfire.org/, and – guess what? – there again is a mix of "LeRoy" and "Leroy", with "Leroy" more prominent. FWIW, non-local GNIS is solely "Leroy".
More comparisons:
  • The very local Lake County Historical Society wrote an article in its November 1970 The Historical Society Quarterly (as collected in their Lake County History book, 1976) about the township using only "Leroy".
  • A semi-locally-published book (ISBN 0897812492) also uses "Leroy".
  • The county's GIS map uses "Leroy", but the county's website uses "LeRoy".
  • Township maps: Three of the basic maps use "LEROY" in the title, and label "Leroy Center" Road as such; the zoning map, with the same base (so still "Leroy Center" Road) uses "Leroy" in the title and "LEROY" in the legend.
Although it seems that there is no official spelling, we probably should leave it as "LeRoy" since it's already like that, and that seems to have a slight edge. (I just added "also Leroy" to the article lead section; the "Leroy" redirect is already [in place].) And I have wondered about this before: Talk:Lake County, Ohio#Township template Mapsax (talk) 20:32, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't mean to write what I'd written yesterday (and which you corrected); I meant to say that it was spelt "Leroy" by many writers, not that it was always spelt that way. Nyttend (talk) 05:21, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This thing won't go away...looking through the entries in the GNIS results (URL above and now in the article), there are various instances of "Le Roy", with the space, scattered throughout the "Variant Names" sections. OK, here I go again.... Mapsax (talk) 20:08, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a resident of Leroy Township, I can say that it is almost always spelled "Leroy". However, we accept that it historically was "LeRoy" and use it for nostalgic purposes on the township hall and some other buildings/roads/etc. However, this usage grows more and more obscure as time goes on. It basically is "Leroy".Betarays (talk) 18:20, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
