No, just like many other false rumors about Koreans and/or Korea, he happens to be a devout Christian. [1] (Korean article) Just because it's ESPN, doesn't mean you can trust whatever it says.
Another false rumor about Korea is that Dokdo (called Liancourt Rocks in the English-speaking world) has never been an island with disputed sovereignty.
