Talk:Les Platons

As for the other Channel Islands, wiki articles have quoted incorrect heights and sometimes inaccurate locations, none of them from authoratitive sources.

The new height is taken from the 1969 Ministry of Defence map, which shows a 446ft spot at Les Platons labelled "Highest Point". This location is also claimed to be the highest in Jersey in current tourist literature, including a cycling map. The Ordnance survey published a map in 1981 based mainly on earlier surveys (not by the OS) supplemented by aerial photography flown by the OS in April 1980. The 1981 map has no "highest point" but spot heights make it clear that the location described is >435ft. The recent 1:25000 Official Leisure map of Jersey gives a height of 134m on La Rue des Platons to the south. These coordinates were given in the previous version of this article.

Both imperial maps show a 460ft contour ring NE of Les Platons, centred at WV658560 on the old UTM30 grid (not referenced to WGS84). The Official Leisure map has a 140m contour here (at WV657557 as it uses the newer UTM30 grid). The 1969 map gives a spot height of 376ft (115m) within this contour; the 1981 map has just the contour ring. However the 1969 map has colour-coded topogrqaphical shading, and there is only one 400ft contour on Jersey. Within that contour, the next highest spot after Les Platons is 436.7ft at WV662553. It seems clear that that this contour is actually 360ft or 110m and a labelling error in the early map has been propagated in modern maps. Galltywenallt (talk) 13:08, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of transmitter[edit]

There is a picture of the transmitter on the commons (File:Êtrueûleux d'la BBC ès Pliatons Jèrri Mai 2009.jpg) for interested uploaders. Rafmarham (talk) 15:51, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The content of the Les Platons article is 95% about the transmitter. If the Les Platons article is stripped back to be about the geographical point then it is questionable whether there will be any content remaining other than the first sentence and the infobox. I don't think it's fair to say it's 95% about Fremont Point Transmitter. It looks to me like it's only the last two paragraphs; the rest of the article is about earlier transmitters on the site, and there's also a mention of the radar station which could be expanded on a bit. In any case, I don't think a merge would be appropriate, because there's nothing in this article which would be relevant to add to the Fremont Point article. @DanFromAnotherPlace: Thanks for your comments. I have got the two transmitters mixed up. I have withdrawn the merge proposal. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 19:12, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
