Talk:Lifeboat Distribution

Lifeboat Associates was a predecessor company to Lifeboat Distribution, so it makes sense to merge the Lifeboat Associates page into the Lifeboat Distribution page -- maybe as a history section.

The following is included in the Forms 10-Q filed 15 May, 1996 by Programmer's Paradise Inc.

In May 1995, Voyager Software Corp. changed its name to "Programmers Paradise, Inc." and consolidated its U.S. catalog and software publishing operations in a new subsidiary, Programmers Paradise Catalogs, Inc. and its wholesale distribution operations in a new subsidiary, Lifeboat Distribution, Inc.

• Comment. So far, I'm not really convinced that this is still genuinely the same company, not just a name, that was carried on after it was sold to Voyager Software Corp in 1986 and Programmer's Paradise's change of Lifeboat Associates' name to Lifeboat Distribution in 1995. However, if others have reliable information that this is actually a direct continuation of the original company and no information from the historically relevant Lifeboat Associates article gets lost in a merge, I won't oppose it either. My skepticism stems from my observation that Wikipedia often lumps together and mixes up similarly named companies which sometimes do not have much to do with each other, if at all. • I worked at Lifeboat Associates 1980-1982. It was a tiny company (maybe 40 employees) that was briefly central to the development and distribution of software for what became the microcomputer revolution. All that came to an end in 1983-84 as the company failed to adapt to a rapidly changing hardware market, among other reasons. Some contracts, clients and, of course, the name was eventually acquired by Voyager Software and a few newer employees from the old Lifeboat went there. Programmer's Paradise was a Lifeboat subsidy or partial spinoff that sold software at a discounted price (it was Lifeboat that established the 'retail' price in the early days and it couldn't theoretically discount except for quantity). Because of the seminal historical nature of the original Lifeboat Associates and the fact that none of the original employees or owners were involved at the time of the Voyager acquisition, I suggest keeping the articles separate, removing the old Lifeboat Associates stuff from the Lifeboat Distribution article and placing a link on the Lifeboat Distribution page back to the article about Lifeboat Associates.Toddkatz (talk) 17:33, 23 October 2016 (UTC)  Done
