Appointment to Senate[edit]

Is this line correct?

Thorp won 89 per cent of the preselection vote to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of stalwart Nick Sherry. She was appointed to the Senate by a joint sitting of the Tasmanian Parliament on 20 June 2012, and sworn in on 21 June.

It seems odd that a state parliament would be responsible for an appointment to the federal Senate? -- Chuq (talk) 22:47, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, that's how it works, although since 1977 the parliaments have been constitutionally required to choose a member of the party of the departing senator. Antony Green goes into more detail here. Frickeg (talk) 23:25, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
