support question[edit]

Hi

I am using Redhat Linux 8.0 operating system and my system is in local network and iam able connect the another linux system with in a network but iam unable to connect the system having the windows as o.s . please help me out regarding this issue.

MorLUG[edit]

I've added MorLUG here, but it seems like it'd be better suited to linking on a US or North American LUGs article. There're seperate articles for LUGs in India, Ireland, etc here at wikipedia, so if someone creates such an article for the US, North America, or some other better-suited locality, please feel free to move the link. Removals[edit]

I just removed two things:

  • A Wiki link to a particular LUG. This doesn't belong here- this isn't a LUG list. There are plenty of those out there, please use them and link to them from here. Please don't put your LUG on this page. It's simply not encyclopedic.
  • A complaint about one such list. I sympathize that it is out of date, as I have experienced that as well. That said, an encyclopedia article is not the correct place for such requests or discussions. This talk page is the correct location for that.

Could you perhaps then remove the link totally? You would not still keep a reference to blood-letting as if it were a current medical treatment. Outdated information can sometimes be dangerous. In this case, it is causing some concern to people who can no longer take on the effort of responding. We (Ottawa LUG) would not be bothered if the link were usable i.e., we could change information.   • It might be good to make an indication next to the link that the link might not be authoritative. I think it would be helpful to note that as Linux is maturing so is the LUG. In our LUG (Provo Linux Users Group: http://www.plug.org) the membership is by far mostly professional. Our presentations typically follow a business focus as well. There are over 400 members on the mailing list, most of them are considered 'advanced' users. We aren't opposed to helping new Linux users, but we are more of a professional guild than a group for new users. Linux User Groups section[edit]

Looks like it has been a while since someone cleaned up this section. The previous section provides all resources necessary for those interested in locating a local LUG, so listing the thousands of individual LUGs seems pointless to me. I believe there is room to mention notable LUGs, such as those appearing in the article as having historical importance or members who are themselves notable (such as the two mentioning Linus and Hans). Many LUGs (or their members) seem to have added themselves into this section, which IMO has the effects of (1) making the article unnecessarily longer and (2) reducing the value of any truly notable LUGs. As such, I'm performing a brief survey of the mentioned groups, to look and comment on the notability of each. My general opinion is that if a LUG does not have a comment following it other than its location, it is not worthy of remaining. The following are criteria I'm using in this informal survey:

  1. Historical importance
  2. Notable members (FOSS leaders actively participate(d), does not include a LUG which hosted Linus/RMS as a one-time event)
  3. Notable work, such as serving as FOSS project incubators
  4. Provide considerable useful material (Howtos) to the LUG community

I'd like to explicitly point out that I'm being brief and likely to miss things. Please feel free to bring back any deserving LUGs. Additionally, I'm not currently looking for unmentioned yet notable LUGs. Please add any you believe may be of interest to readers. MJKazin (talk) 19:10, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I didn't find any notable LUGs in the current list. I moved a couple of links up to the External Links section, and removed everything left in the LUGs section as well as the header. Wasn't really happy to remove the section, but at least it'll discourage the practice of self-advertising. As I said earlier, please feel free to add the section back and post LUGs worthy of mention.
