Hormone deficiency
From the age of 11, he suffered from a hormone deficiency and as his parents were unable to pay for treatment in Argentina, they decided to move to Barcelona, Spain. Shortly after arriving, Lionel tried his luck with a trial at FC Barcelona, despite being only 13 years of age.
His parents could not afford to pay for his treatment and Barcelona offered to pay his medical fees on the condition that they move to Spain and join FC Barcelona. Please change it.

Removed sentence
I've removed the sentence:
Messi was selected in the Argentina squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The reason is that, as of May 14 2006, no list of the Argentina 2006 World Cup Squad has been made public. Remember Messi is still recovering from an injury which could complicate his participation in the World Cup. Chance to play for Spain's team
Is it true or a rumor that when Julio H. Grondona (AFA's president) knew about Spain's intention of inviting him to play for the Spanish team, he set a friendly match with another national team just to make Messi play (and making him prohibited to play for any other national team according to FIFA's rule).

- Tocalli (youth argentine national team manager) admited in public that he called him in purpose to the youth team for him to play for Argentina instead of Spain. This is how the opening abstract para goes...
Lionel Andrés Messi (born 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina) is an Argentine football player, who currently plays as a second striker for FC Barcelona. He is often touted in the media as "the new Diego Maradona", along with his fellow youth team mates Javiniho Brytos and Ricardo Jussi, who have also been compared to the great "Diego Maradona" . This years World cup is a perfect stage for these three players to make a name for themselves for the Argentina National team.
I too hope Javiniho Brytos and Ricardo Jussi does well and go far. But as far as the topic goes, is it appropriate to speak about them as a trio in the description abstract of one of the players? Hope it is appropriate to remove the mention in this context?

Not the Youngest Player to Score a Goal for Barca
Lionel Messi is not the Youngest player to score a goal for Barcelona. The Legendary Paulino Alcántara was the youngest player to score a goal for Barca at 15 years of age, 4 months and 18 days. Rooney won 2, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robinho won only 1 and they're older. French fan site - is it acceptable?

This is a French fan site. Even though the poster posted as "messi19.iespana.es" it actually redirects to "www.mesi.fr". It is a personal site from a fan somebody adoring Messi. Although it seems to contain some up to date information, it also contains advertising and a button to pay through Paypal to maintain the site. It seems it runs counter to WP:EL, especially #4.3 and #5 but was not 100% sure in this case as several other EL sites in other player's articles suffer from the same issue. Messi is a right winger.
If you watch his games, you can clearly see he sticks to the right wing and only goes to the middle of the box when needed to shoot or in corners. Also, if you check Barcelona season pages, you can see there he is considered as a RW, and on the field-sketch you can see he is located in the right side of the field. 07/08 Champions League Semi Final Performances
In both the legs, Messi outshone Cristiano Ronaldo,who was believed to be the world's best player at the time. Messi had just recovered from injury as well.

- While it's true that they are pre-season numbers, I don't agree with you on them being "random". Ronaldinho was the former 10 for Barça and was sold to Milan, and there are no other plans for Guardiola to come up with a different #10. So it's safe to assume Messi will be #10. Career Success
It says in the paragraph about the 06-07 season that Messi has not had a very successful football life. There are a couple of reasons why I don't really like this phrase - first of all, it's an opinion, and secondly, it's wrong. I assumed this must have been based on his goal return but if you look at his stats he scores almost every other game for FC Barcelona and one in three for Argentina. - First of all, capital letters isn't really helping clarify your point; if that was the case then I'm sure all international relations would be conducted in caps. It's not the case, so don't do it. Secondly, perhaps you should read Wikipedia:No original research: Wikipedia is only a reflection of real world sources, and you should use them to back up your statements. Thirdly, I think "playing style and ability" comparable to Maradona is even more of a complement than any hyperbole about a single goal that he scored against Getafe: Messi is more than that. Besides, talking about "stunning individual goals" makes you sound like a tabloid writer at best, and a besotted fifteen-year-old at worst.
- Fourthly, I noted the young player of the year awards because those are the ones he's actually won and it represents that he is a young player; this is only the beginning of his career, hopefully he'll go on to achieve much more. Finally, when you state "best player in world" you are arguably including every living player, past or present. Such comparisons across generations are inherently flawed, and frankly you're are not going to get sources saying "Messi is as good as or better than Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer, Zidane, Ronaldo, Cruyff, etc etc". Redressing bias
While re-writing the lead I noticed various instances of bias and POV in the body. Here are just some examples:
- a seemingly telepathic relationship with Ronaldinho that earned him a standing ovation from the 70,000-odd Camp Nou faithful.,
- Once again, El Clásico saw Messi in top form,
- Messi also proved the "new Maradona" tag was not all hype
There is important and true information in there but it should be either cited from a reliable source (stating who said what), or rewritten in a less tabloid manner. For example (1) could easily be written as "Fans at the Nou Camp gave Messi a standing ovation upon his substitution, as his composure on the ball and link-up play with Ronaldinho had paid dividends for Barcelona."
Poor writing and off-topic information also exists: e.g.
- Messi carried out his recuperation in native Argentina. During this period there were rumours of interest in the player from Internazionale.
- Also, other columnists from Barcelona-based newspapers El Mundo Deportivo and Sport began asking for the Ballon d'Or to be given to Leo Messi this year. This observation was also made by world football legends Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruijff.
- Coach José Pekerman controversially left Messi on the bench
Such information should be reduced, removed, sourced, or rewritten. I'll look to do some of this myself but if it persists then this article will fully deserve a big ugly POV tag. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 19:39, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Winning the Champions League
I may be wrong, but as far as I was concerned players only "win" the Champions League and get a medal if they are in the match-day squad for the final, which Messi wasn't against Arsenal in 2006 due to injury. Also in 2004/2005, Messi did not play enough games for a La Liga title medal. Therfore, if this can be verified, both should be removed from his individual honours. What's the point of saying IN THE FIRST SENTENCE that Messi is of Italian descent?
What's the point of saying in the first sentence that a person born in the Americas is of some European descent? The vast majority of people in either Anglo-America or Latin America is of European descent; in particular, Italian-Argentines make up about 60 percent of the Argentine population.
In the other hand, the Italian ancestry of Messi can be deduced from his last name, and I don't see in the first sentence of the article about Eisenhower that he was an American president of German descent, or in the 1st sentence of the article on JFK that he was a president of Irish descent, although the proportion of German-Americans (17 %) or Irish-Americans (12 %) is much lower than that of the Italian-Argentines (60 %).

Messi's recent awards
Messi have won more significant awards, apart from awards mentioned in his page. He have recently won two LFP Awards: Best Striker and Best La Liga Player of the season 2008/09 [2]. He also was awarded Best Player of 2009 by the "Four Four Two" Magazine [3]. I Think that at least LFP Awards should be mentioned in his page, because they are pretty important.
Messi was also chosen to FIFA Team of The Year 2008[4]. This award is included for instance in Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi page, so there is no obstacles to put it here as well.

Messi's position
Messi's real position is Second Striker (SS) usually on the right side, however Messi can play both sides and is also capable of playing center forward.
The SS position is in between the forward and midfield
His position should say Second Striker and Center Forward!

- So you think it should be listed as Striker/Winger like Thierry Henry? Messi certainly plays on the wing a large part of the time, so I think it would be wrong to remove the "winger" notation, though I wouldn't argue with adding the striker part. (As a side note, I don't think he's a "second striker" per se because, like Henry, he plays on a 3-man front that shifts constantly, meaning at all times Messi is prone to moving around from position-to-position, often occupying all parts of the midfield and attack throughout a single match) Isaiah (talk) 16:54, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Okay then some should change it to Striker/Winger. I said second striker because he acts like one in ways but as you said he is on the wing for most of the time. He has played in the Center, as it states on his profile at the Barcelona website that he can play both sides and in the middle. Someone must add striker! Please correct number of goals scored for FC Barcelona
In information box in top right, the number of goals scored for Barcelona needs to be fixed. Currently says "70," but as of 6 February, Messi has scored 103 goals for Barcelona, I believe, in all competitions. See his career statistic for details. --Lulletc (talk) 13:43, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

- Why shouldn't the infobox also include Champions League and other goals--some of which, in the case of Messi, have contributed to important titles, like the World Club Championship and various Supercups?
