Lisbon Lions, Featured Article[edit]

Will it be a featured article on the 25th of May 2007? It should be. How can I nominate it? 63.113.199.109 02:02, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sporting Clube de Portugal, "Lions of Lisbon" since 1906.[edit]

Why was this entry...

Note: Sporting Clube de Portugal, of Lisbon, are informally known within Portugal as "The Lions" due to their club mascot. Coincidentally, they also play in green and white shirts.

...erased as being "irrelevant" in 5 January 2009 at 00:11?

What makes some people think that it is okay to simply turn a blind eye on 61 years of other club's history? For those who ignore, Sporting Clube de Portugal is one of the Big Three in Portugal, hails from Lisbon and their athletes and supporters have always been known as "Lions" since its establishment in 1906, long before Celtic's feat in 1967.

It may be irrelevant for 5 million Scots who don't care for what's beyond their borders, but it is not irrelevant for 10 million Portuguese and many more abroad. Sporting has not won a football European Cup in Glasgow and named their players "Glasgow Bhoys", but has won the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, and besides football has thousands of national and international titles in tens of disciplines like Athletics, Handball, Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Billiards, Martial Arts, ETC. All won by Lions of Lisbon, since 1906.

Fine if Celtic supporters want to name their 1967 side as "Lisbon Lions" (the game was not even played in Lisbon, but okay) and that long before 1967 there was a club from Lisbon already nicknamed Lions... of Lisbon. So, please ponder over undeleting encyclopedic references not because both clubs have always had excellent relations (which is the irrelevant part despite being a fact) but because no one has authority to decide what part of history suits better his or her own ego. if you have reliable sources for this then it can go into the article. Monkeymanman (talk) 12:54, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
