Untitled[edit]

I created this page from a section on Asian American. If you think this page is not pretty, just imagine how ugly it makes the actual article. --ishu 23:32, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup: "Duplicates"[edit]

User:Jack O'Lantern suggested that we clean up this page to elminate names on ethnicity-specific lists. I'm not sure whether a person is a "duplicate" if he/she is listed on this page and also on an ethnicity-specific list. Otherwise, we should also eliminate articles like List of famous San Franciscans in favor of List of people from California.--ishu 12:49, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, what's the game plan here? To have a list of Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Americans, and then have this list that would include all of the people listed on the specific lists? Because, of course, one could easily have a "List of European Americans" that would include all the specific ones like Irish, Norwegian, etc. I think at this point in time there is a large enough amount of Asian Americans out there (as opposed to the smaller of Arab Americans amount and hence the relatively small List of Arab Americans) to have specific lists rather than a general "Asian" one. Of course, we could keep this page and post links to the specific X-American lists for every Asian ethnicity. That would actually be helpful. Mad Jack 22:22, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Following from the example I gave, not everyone on List of famous San Franciscans is included in List of people from California. Then there's Category:People from San Francisco and List of people associated with San Francisco. The lists need not be mutually exclusive, and the lists should be cross-referenced. It goes without saying that there are comparable categories for Los Angeles and "even" for San Diego. I didn't check New York City, but what are the chances? So this is a wikiwide ocurrence. I don't see a problem, but I'm open to arguments that it might be. --ishu 01:43, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is consistancy. You seem to be saying that not everyone from the specific X (Asian)-American lists should be on the general one, but in that case there's no way to decide who should or shouldn't be that doesn't border on Original Research. If we follow catgories, then people who are in the "People from San Francisco" and "People from Los Angeles" categories are not usually in the "People from California" category (and similar the people under "Thai-Americans" are not under the general "Asian Americans"). So I think this page would be much more helpful as a directory to the sub-pages of specific ethnicity lists. Mad Jack 04:23, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This wouldn't be the only inconsistency on WP, and I think it's rather minor. "Not usually in" is a squishy standard. Looking only at names beginning with 'A' or 'B' on List of famous San Franciscans and List of people from California, there are at least seven "duplicates." I'm confident that there are even more to be found at List of people from Los Angeles. I'll add a see also with the ethnicity lists. --ishu 16:43, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The whole point of this list was to cleanup Asian American and not have that article become a list. I think it's fine that there may be "duplicates" between names on this list and names on the "X-American" lists, since it reflects the current thinking about Asian American identity - that we identify with our specific ethnic origin but unify as pan-Asian for the purpose of opening doors. For example, Gary Locke as the first Asian American, not just Chinese American, state governor. Also, with the increasing number of adopted, bi-racial, and multi-racial Asian Americans, this list gives them a space that allows them to identify without having to choose one or another country-specific "ethnic" list. Finally, "Asian American" is recognized by the US census, whereas "X-American" is generally not. Wl219 00:43, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that we need to keep the list to notable Asian Americans who have contributed to our American society. I have had to removed a couple of Republic of South VietNam and Hmong Generals on here in the Military section. --Srw_navy 1847 24 December 2009 PT —Preceding undated comment added 02:47, 25 December 2009 (UTC).[reply]

On several occassions, there have been attempted additions of an individual by the name of Al Young. The article listed links to an African American poet. Due to WP:SCOPE this list is for Asian Americans. No references, from reliable sources, have been provided to support inclusion of this subject on this list. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 02:02, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the Al Young insertion requires a disambiguated wikipedia article (a biographical article for the intended Al Young has yet to be written). The following is probably the person the editor is attempting to list: [1]. — Myasuda (talk) 15:07, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If this is the case, which it appears to be, then a redlink to Al Young need to be used, and the above reference included to support inclusion in the list.
That being said there may be conflict of interest issues here as well, given the editor's username "Bigalyoung". --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 22:46, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hip hop[edit]

I recently discovered that there is a stand-alone list article named List of Asian-American hip hop musicians. As this Stand alone list has not reached the point stated in WP:ARTICLESIZE it is my opinion that such a list should be merged into this list. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 01:47, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Without hearing objections, I shall merge the content into the section List of Asian Americans#Music.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:12, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
