St. Matthew's[edit]

The proper name of the Washington D.C. cathedral is "The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle" not "St. Matthew's Cathedral," although the latter is a common nickname. We should list under the official name, however, and I've reverted accordingly. Essjay · talk 06:03, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Indiana?[edit]

The article says that the archdiocese of Indianapolis only covers nine counties of Indiana, but there's no indication of what diocese covers the rest. --Jfruh (talk) 20:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes this is a complete list as it has all Roman Catholic cathedrals and this article is mostly concerned with that subject. That said there could be room to add Eastern Catholic cathdrals as long as there is a seperation between Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic. Briaboru

I have to disagree. By relegating the Eastern Catholics, even those with established metropolias, to their own section at the end of the page, we suggest they are not of the same class or importance as the Latin cathedrals. I would like to point out that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, on it's page listing the dioceses in the US includes them all in alphabetical order. It does not relegate the easterners to the bottom of the page, but incorporate all dioceses and eparchies into one list. Gentgeen 17:05, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

terminology[edit]

The terminology employed is inaccurate and ill-defined and, thus, of questionable use to a reader unfamiliar with the canonical jurisdictional structure of the Catholic Church. It groups cathedrals by the Metropolitan See or Province in which each is situated, but fails to anywhere define or explain that, instead using the terminology "Metropolitan" in a context that suggests its more common civil geographic/demographic application. Accordingly, a reader familiar with the latter, but not the former, would be surprised to read that "Metropolitan Boston comprises the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont" - a significantly broader geographic definition than would ordinarily be applied to "Metropolitan Boston" in common parlance.

I note that Wiki article "List of the Roman Catholic Dioceses of the United States", cited here as a resource - although it has its own problems - uses the terminology "Ecclesiastical Province" in this same context; that is a much more acceptable choice of terminology in regards to user-understandability. Eastern Churches[edit]

The list remains incomplete on this count, still not including the Eparchy of Newton of the Melkites, the Eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance in Newark of the Syriacs, or the Eparchy of Saint George in Canton of the Romanians.

Additionally, the latter half of the statement "The Metropolia of Pittsburgh includes all parishes of the Ruthenian Catholic Church in the United States, as well as those parishes of other Byzantine Rite churches with no established hierarchy in the United States." is inaccurate. I presume that its author intended to convey, thereby, that the Byzantine Metropolia's predecessor jurisdiction was accorded pastoral responsibility for the Byzantine Slav faithful of certain Churches sui iuris without hierarchical representation in the US; however, that extended solely to the faithful of the Croat, Hungarian, and Slovak Greek Catholic Churches. It does not (nor did it ever) extend to or include parishes of other Byzantine Caholic Churches, which at the time included Melkites, Romanians, and Belarusians, and still includes Byzantine Italo-Graeco-Albanians and Russian Greek-Catholics, whose parishes are subject to the Latin Catholic ordinaries in which they are situated.

Finally, the accepted and appropriate usage vis-a-vis those Eastern Catholic jurisdictions which incorporate both patronal and geographic references in their styling (e.g. Eparchy - Saint - City) is Eparchy of Saint in City; thus, Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma. Other missing cathedrals[edit]

This list doesn't contain any of the Catholic cathedrals in Montana, which are all "Roman Catholic Cathedrals." St. Helena's Cathedral in Helena, St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings, and St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls are all missing.

gcatholic.org[edit]

I have removed gcatholic.org from citations because it is not a reliable secondary site. It lacks editorial oversight and a reputation for fact-checking. It mostly just mirrors what is on catholic-hierarchy.org, another non-RS. I have replaced all citations in question with {{citation needed}}. Elizium23 (talk) 22:27, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
