Teru's Catchphrase

I'd be interested in learning what his catchphrase was in Japanese. This, along with anything else in the series that is different between the two versions. Is this sort of thing the kind of thing that belongs in the main article? If not, could someone answer in reply to this? Haze01 10:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

In Japanese, the term used is sakujo, a noun meaning "deletion." (Compare to the verb sakujo suru, meaning "to delete.")

Article's Tense

This article seems to jump around with it's tense at times. I may be mistaken, but I think that discussion of literature is to be done in the present tense at all times. It's pretty minor, but I feel it should be brought up for discussion. Haze01 10:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Kiyomi Takada

I should probably research this more before posting, but there's speculation that she was actually killed by Teru Mikami. Even though Teru's note was written for a later time of death, it's possible he wrote it before Light, trumping Light's attempt. Even if this turns out to not be true, it might be important to mention under Kiyomi Takada that Teru Mikami's attempt at killing her is vital to the ending of the story. No, Teru wrote her name down 1 minute after Light wrote her name down. Regardless of whose effect worked,because writing the name in one note and the effect in another, the effect will take place if the mental image is of the same person, without the name having to be written with name again, the person who killed her would be Light because he wrote the name a minute prior. It is complicated and would need more research, but I am certain Light kills her, not Mikami.

Basically the first person to write down the name is the Death Note that takes effect. Take into account the movie where L evaded death by writing his name down in Misa's Death Note prior to Rem writing L's name in her Death Note. So in other words, Mikami did nothing to Takada.NinjaRooster 07:45, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Rem, Aiber, and Wedy

My impression from reading the manga was that Rem is the one who killed Aiber and Wedy, along with Watari and L. If that's true, it would change the "killed by" section under all three characters. Haze01 10:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

As for the killings of Wedy and Aiber, that is a negative. Light Yagami wrote the names down for Aiber and Wedy. Greg Jones II 17:55, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

-Sorry, I'm not interested in knowing what happened in the Anime. As far as I know, Light had no access to Aiber and Wedy's real names. Reading the manga once again, the characters Aiber and Wedy are introduced in volume five, where they meet Light and the rest of the investigation team. At this point, they are known only by their nicknames, and both Light and Misa have lost their memories of the Death Note. Rem sees Aiber in chapter 46. It seems unlikely that a photograph of him would be found and brought to Misa. It seems unlikeley that anyone ever discovered Wedy's name, including Rem, but Rem is still the most likely suspect in my opinion. Since the manga-ka inexplicably made the decision to not show the interior of Rem's notebook, I can't be certain. If someone other than Rem killed Wedy and Aiber, it is somewhat more likely to be Misa than it is to be Light. If it was Light in the anime, I imagine it was done for a reason as unlikely as whatever reason was used for not showing Rem's notebook and L's real name.

-In the manga, Rem decides to "write down the name[s] of people whose deaths would lengthen Misa's remaining lifespan," and that she has "until the first person dies... that's 40 seconds" to do so. Are you seriously telling me that you believe Rem could only think of L and no one else to add after Watari? Or that it took a shinigami forty seconds to write a single name? I can see that being possible, but I think Rem had the time to write "Quillish Wammy" followed by "L Lawliet" then "Tierry Morello disease" and finally "Merrie Kenwood accident 1/10/05".

-That said, having the remaining six Yotsuba group members die on the same day as Merrie Kenwood throws a wrench into that idea, unless Rem somehow managed to also write those six names down. Or Light opened Rem's notebook on a later date, and just decided to have them die at the same time as Wedy, so he wrote the six down for the same date. Is there any information regarding these characters' deaths in volume 13:HtR, in the anime, or in interviews with Ohba about the manga? It's possible that Rem did not kill anyone besides Watari and L, but why wouldn't she try to get more? If Light and/or Misa did it, how did they discover their true names? The manga, volume seven especially, is far from perfect. There are plotholes and mistakes. I think this is one of them.Haze01 23:28, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Aliases

About half of the characters are listed in the format Alias/Real Name, while others are listed soley by one or the other. This should probably be made consistent for all characters with aliases. Haze01 10:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Minor Shinigami and The King

Volume 8 of the manga has a conversation between Shidoh and Armonia Jastin that brings up "The King". Do we have any information on this character from 13:HtR? What about any information about the various minor shinigami characters that appear? Would it be in the interest of this article to include whatever scant information can be found about these characters? Haze01 07:48, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Jealous' name and the English manga

Which volumes mention Jealous' name?

The 4th printing of Volume 4 of the English-language manga states "Gelus" - Maybe it was corrected in newer printings.

Also, one of the volumes refers to a "Mary Kenwood" (Lemme see which printing) - Will later printings correct this too? WhisperToMe 01:04, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Shinigami eyes

Is it just me, or is it pointless to put a "shinigami eyes" descriptor on a shinigami name box? Or was there a mention somewhere that some shinigami dont have them?Quatreryukami

Near's date of death

The article states that Near will die in 2015 according to his remaining lifespan of 43406 (Shinigami time). Is it really safe to say that? I don't know if there's an "official" way to translate shinigami time into human time, but if there is not, I think we should not dare to think we can translate it. It could be something more complicated than a proporcionality.

Ok, I think I've waited enough, I'll remove it for now. If someone has a reliable way to translate shinigami time into human time, then I think it's ok to keep it, so no hard feelings. HighLight43 21:09, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

By my calculations, the person who came up with his date of death is assuming that shinigami time is actually counted in human hours (his date of death as of vol. 12 was 43406. 43406 hours is roughly equal to 5 years, Near's supposed time of death). L In The Film

This article states that there is not time jump from the first to second film and the second film takes place shortley after L's death. I watched both films and even checked the film in wikipedia, both say the second film takes place after light's girlfriends death. is their another film that I am unaware of or is this a mistake? The films change a lot of the storyline, so saying it takes place after the part in the manga where L dies is incorrect, they're really two completely different storylines, so it's incorrect to compare them like that. That's part of why the films were split out from the main article for the manga: they're based on the same premise, but they're VERY different in practice. Nique talk 22:20, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

New articles for Light, L, and Misa?

The Japanese Wikipedia has separate articles for Light, L, and Misa.

I think it could be a good idea, considering the popularity of Death Note and the importance of these characters. And there is enogh information to create nice articles. I disagree. I don't think there's really enough information about them to justify having separate articles for Light, L, and Misa, let alone Mello and Near. If we did try to separate the information out, the pages would only end up being stubs, or little better than stubs. I think we're better off keeping all the information on this page, especially since the series is now over, so there won't be a whole lot of new information about them. Remember that L is the subject of an upcoming novel and an upcoming film, so he will get more information. Also, Light and Misa MAY get more information from the Death Note special that will air tomorrow. I never advocated splitting characters like Mello and Near - Just Light, L, and Misa. If there's enough information about L revealed in the upcoming novel and film to make up a whole article, then yes, he should then be split out to his own article. However, Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, we don't know yet what will or will not be revealed, so we shouldn't jump the gun on creating new articles if they're not going to stand up to guidelines. What we will do is wait for the movie to be released and for the special to be released. Information would be added accordingly :) I have a feeling that a load of more information will be released since the novel is about the "Los Angeles BB Serial Murder Case," which is not elaborated in the original series. Not really. Naruto is a long, ongoing series. There's obviously more information about the character as it goes on. Death Note is finished, and even after the special, not much if any information has been added about these characters. There simply isn't enough to justify articles for Light or Misa, and we can't make an article for L counting on the fact that there'll be new information in the spinoff movie and novel. 3 Hour Special Edits?

Admittedly, there wasn't a lot of new things but they were different nevertheless. Would it be too out of place to add these new events into the article for either characters or anime episodes? Sake neko 19:27, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't beleive it would be out of place. Only few things changed, like Deaths of the Yotsuba group and I believe it should be mentioned as many things that differ in movies and anime and manga are often mentioned. Moreover, Light as Shinjigami (or is it Light? My Japanese isn't really good) is definitely worth mentioning. - Grujah.

Well, there's also some other changes like the unamaed Shinigami, Ryuk with no pupils, the police fabricating a response to Second Kira without Light's help, scene with L's grave, and the strong implication that Ryuk writes Light's name in the Death Note after he "wins" against L. There are one or two different things but I was wondering if they bear mention in the article or not as a Director's Cut is just that. Sake neko 14:27, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Section ordering

I've been wikifying the article a bit, particulary getting rid of the subsections that elongated the TOC. Now there are around 10 sections left, could we order them in proper parent sections, so there'd only be a few parent sections left? Main characters / Minor characters / Supporting characters, split on believes (pro or anti Kira),... So it would look like this for instance:

• Main characters
  • Shinigami
  • Investigation team
  • xxx
• Minor characters
  • Yagami family
  • Sakura tv
  • xxx

What would be the most logical way to do this? The idea is to have an easy navigation for wikireaders, also those who are not familiar with the subject. Ninja neko 13:31, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh crap! I looked at the page, saw the clean up tags and began editing away. I just added loads of subsections! It was only when I finished doing about half that I checked the edit history and then talk page...

In my opinion, I think an elongated TOC box is a sacrifice worth making if it means making this article standardised. The subsections; I think they make it easier to navigate compared with having just parent sections. I feel like an oaf now... Ok. Well breaking off the sections wasn't the only thing I did. I reodered the names and took out the extraneous colons. It'll probably take me about 10 more minutes to finish, so what I'll do is finish what I'm doing, see what it looks like and go from there. Oh well. I guess I was only being bold.

I'm still not done...I've also been going through the article to remove images and checking images. There can be a maximum of one image per character because of fair use criteria. I have been removing doubles to minimise those types of concerns.

Ok, I've just finished. Here is the diff for the layout I've just finished [1] and here's a diff for the layout before I changed anything [2]. I'm actually really pleased how it turned out. I moved the {{nihongo}} templates from the titles to the actual beginning of the character descriptions. I removed the indents throughout the article because they didn't really fit with standardised wiki style. After I'd finished I went through to remove some more subsections so hopefully it incorporates the simplicity you were going for and navigation ease. I hope you'll be pleased with the changes. The article looks really good!

There must have been some misunderstanding here... :( You recreated most of the subsections I had removed (per WP:MOS-ANIME#Page_layout Character sections should not be divided into numerous sub-sections, as this makes the table of contents unnecessarily long.. The use of definition lists which start with nihongo templates is used throughout the WP:ANIME project and should be kept as a standard.

The idea was to keep the sections that I left and use them as sub sections. And create a couple of parent sections like 'main characters' and 'minor characters', which is a lot easier to navigate for readers who are not that familiar with the Death Note universe. I'll remove the recreated subsections again per WP:MOS-ANIME. Ninja neko 07:24, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I've restored the definition list layout. I've also divided the sections into two parent sections: Main characters and Supporting characters. As I don't have a thourough knowledge on Death Note, this division may not be ideal, but it represents my idea. Supporting characters could also use a division (for instance 'police', 'criminals', 'others') to contain the other sections. Please don't create any extra subsections per character again. I haven't said your edits were bad or anything, I just wanted to make the article (which is an anime/manga article, list or not) to be in line with the other wikiproject articles. I've asked the people at WP:MOS-ANIME to set up a section on the list articles as well, so if you like you can help out there to come to draft a guideline/consensus of 'List of' anime/manga articles.
