Spoilers[edit]

Now that this is its own article, should we slap a spoiler warning on it and no longer censor such things? Due to the nature of Higurashi, it would allow us to provide significantly more pertinent information on the role of the characters, especially the minor ones. -Seventh Holy Scripture 17:56, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree with this action. I'll add the tags now.---- () 20:13, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hanyuu[edit]

Why did you delete my info about Hanyuu? It was correct that she is Oyashiro-sama. -_-; --88.212.20.67 22:28, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a necessary spoiler. And she's only the "footsteps behind your back". Though I didn't remove it. -- Psi edit 00:43, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But it should be writed there, that she is Oyashiro-sama -_-; its very important information (and i have it from 7th game)
I haven't been completely spoiled on games 7-8, but judging from this fanart image and others, Oyashiro-sama looks similar but not the same. Does Hanyuu transform into her? -Seventh Holy Scripture 13:24, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seventh Scripture...I don't know how to explain it, but Hanyu is not "really" Oyashiro-sama but people & fans like to call Hanyu, Oyashiro-sama. -- Psi edit 22:00, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nah she is real Oyashiro-sama but as a weak God she has no powers at all (except time travel with Rika) but villagers do many cruel things in her name. But that doesn't alter the fact that she is taking care of Hinamizawa as guardian goddess. ;) All this Oyashiro-sama curse is only an effect of the L5 stage of virus that Mion's father developed. --88.212.20.67 15:09, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
882122067 I left you a message here. -- Psi edit 00:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with what Psi edit wrote in the message. Springbreak04 16:07, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Reina"[edit]

It's mentioned in the TIPS that Rena's real name is Reina (礼奈) [1]. I'm just not sure where to put that. Next to her name? NiraGreen 19:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's sort of a big spoiler. You don't really have to add that. But if you really wan't to add it, put in her description saying "In blah chapter it is revelaed that her original name is Reina" and such and such. -- Psi edit 02:07, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Is it really a big spoiler? I thought the only spoiler was why she started going by Rena instead of Reina (and still don't think it's much of one.) -Seventh Holy Scripture 02:23, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah actually it isn't a big spoiler. Well except for people who really want to know that on their own. -- Psi edit 02:39, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a big spoiler - in fact it's in one of the earliest TIPS. Just that it wasn't mentioned in the anime until the last arc. Defireman 06:25, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed, really?[edit]

A sentence in Mion's description, "She is often seen with a holstered airsoft gun." is marked as citation needed when she's seen with it for like half an entire part of original game...I can't really see why citation tag has to be in there or am I missing something? -58.0.213.1 10:58, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a hidden message next to the line which states "Where does it say it's an airsoft gun?" and this is why the template was placed there. There isn't any proof it's airsoft, or a real gun.-- 11:11, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just state it's a gun then. -Seventh Holy Scripture 13:42, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the point, Mion actually uses her "gun" against Rena in Hirukowashi-chapter, which indeed describes that it's an airsoft gun like what Keiichi used for shooting children. -58.0.213.1 12:06, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Official romanizations[edit]

Due to these three images from the PS2 version: Keichi, Rena, and Satoko, I am changing their romanizations accordingly.-- 15:35, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lead paragraphs[edit]

I don't really think it's necessary to copy those here... maybe the first paragraph, but the rest is largely summarized straight from the information already in this article. Is it customary to have a opening summary like that in character-list articles? -Seventh Holy Scripture 16:44, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe, as stated at WP:LEAD, each article is supposed to have a lead that is meant to be a summary and overview of the entire article that follows. We could shorten it some, but a sizeable lead is definately needed.-- 19:58, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, a short summary based on the current lead sounds rather good. what about a quick overview like citing various "groups" in higurashi? (such like the "kids", the 3 main households, Irie's hospital, outsiders, etc.) Klashikari 20:11, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Organizing it into groups in the lead when it's not organized like that in the article would be confusing, and then wouldn't that be rather ambiguous?-- 00:56, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hanyuu/Takano[edit]

Would it be better to move Hanyuu up to the main character section? While she doesnt appear until the last few arcs, she's far from minor. I'm also debating this with Takano as well, but it's less likely for her. 74.72.13.158 21:05, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy over images[edit]

I don't understand the shuffling of images that has been going on in this article. Are we attempting to comply better with WP:NFCC #3 by using a group image instead of the individual portraits? If so, could a better quality image of the group be found? Image:Higurashi_main_characters.jpg is rather blurry and lacking contrast. -Seventh Holy Scripture 05:36, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since the user was determined to remove the PS2 pics, I added in the pic from the main article, but yes I agree that it is very poor quality. Perhaps when the first DVD comes out we can get a better shot.-- 05:39, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:HiguMatsuri Keiichi.png (etc.)[edit]

Image:HiguMatsuri Keiichi.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 19:57, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've dealt with these by switching to the proper template on the image description pages. -Seventh Holy Scripture (talk) 22:10, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Character ages?[edit]

Ages are not listed for any of the characters, were they present in any sources? Tyciol (talk) 03:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. :( Rena is a little younger then Keiichi (but they're the same age, Rena's birthday is after Keiichi's.), Mion & Shion are 1 year older then Rena and Keiichi. Satoko and Rika are the same age, Satoko's under ten so they should be at least 9. Hanyuu should be physically 9 years old too. 98.14.15.12 (talk) 19:50, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If they're under 10, wouldn't that mean they are at most 9? Also, do you know the data on where it says they're under 10, and where it says this about Hanyuu? Was it something like Hanyuu was able to connect with Rika because they were the same age? Tyciol (talk) 03:44, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oyashiro's gender[edit]

This refers to Oyashiro as male, but shouldn't it be female? In the sound novels, according to the translations I've seen which are pretty accurate, Oyashiro is referred to as female by Rena. Also, shouldn't they notice Hanyuu's female? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.14.15.12 (talkcontribs)

Other people refer to Oyashiro besides Rena though right? Is it possible that she's the only one who uses a feminine form? In real life some people do change the gender of deities when they refer to them. As for Hanyuu, initially when she appears I don't even think they know the true nature of who or what she is (save for Rika), so are the comments being referred to before or after they learn of her nature? Tyciol (talk) 03:44, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It should be female, I remember Hanyuu said Oyashiro was a woman in her life.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.5.198.103 (talk) 22:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious information added on January 30th[edit]

I'm quite astonished to find such kind of information all of a sudden, regarding Mion, Shion, Hanyuu and Bernkastel. These are as follow:

  • Mion It is revealed in TIPS that in various other worlds manipulated by Bernkastel, Mion was driven to murder as a result of jealousy involving Keiichi being paired up with Shion, Rena, or even Satoko, and it is implied, but not outright stated, that witnessing some form of sexual encounter between one of the former two and Keiichi was the trigger that lead her to kill (as for the latter, the trigger was the closeness they shared), and that even in one case, after an encounter of her own with Keiichi, Mion began to eliminate everyone she saw as "competition".
  • Shion TIPS reveal that Shion has always been slightly resentful of Mion becoming the heir, as well as also revealing her having an interest in Keiichi that extends beyond flirting.
  • Hanyuu The final chapter in the PS2 game reveals that Hannyu is actually an alien, and that Hinamizawa syndrome is actually caused by tiny organisms from her planet.
  • Bernkastel She even has an intention of making a world where Rika's or Satoko's parents did not die, or pairing Keiichi with various girls.

So far, I strongly believe that none of these were actually from any TIPS of the original game or PS2 (Bernkastel comment doesn't make any sense with Saikoroshi-hen, by the way). I might be wrong, but an appropriate source should be provided. In the meantime, I think removing these parts is the best action available right now, which I did. Please feel free to discuss about them or reverse it, as long as you provide source and convincing references (original japanese text, etc). Klashikari (talk) 17:08, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Must not laugh. That information is not right at all, though Fredrica's info is somewhat true. Fredrica did say she liked watching people fight, so maybe that person took it the wrong way, though this seems more like trolling then someone being naive. Hanyuu's info hardly makes sense, though someone can think of her as an alien, by accident, due to her powers and horns. 98.14.15.12 (talk) 04:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wa?[edit]

When does Satoko end her sentences with that, I've never heard it 98.14.15.12 (talk) 03:04, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This habit isn't exactly noticeable in the anime series, but Satoko really abuses this ending particle in the games and drama CD. She generally use this casually, but it is really obvious when she is taunting and playing pranks with glee, with her "oh-oh-oh". Klashikari (talk) 17:56, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Keiichi vs Rika as the main protagonist[edit]

The top of the page states that Keiichi is the main protagonist, but isn't Rika the main protagonist of the series? Keiichi's section correctly states that he is the protagonist for the first three question arcs, but the top of the page implies that he is the main protagonist of the entire series. Rika, on the other hand, could easily be considered as the series protagonist, as she is the only one who remembers the parallel universes and is trying to "defeat fate". Moreover, it is her death that gives birth to new universes, thanks to Hanyu. Perhaps we should change the top section in a way that doesn't state Keiichi as the main protagonist, and in Rika's section, mention that she is later revealed to be the protagonist of the series. Renian (talk) 21:19, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's a tough call, and really comes down to your definition of 'protagonist'. Rika has the closest connection to the central plotline of the multiple universes, true- but Keiichi is the one whom the player's experience parallels as they learn about the mystery of Hinamizawa, whom experiences the most character development, and I feel his actions are more significant in most of the arcs... even in Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi, Rika doesn't do much beyond narrate; she's just a little girl, after all. I'd be in favor of either giving them equal billing as co-protagonists or (preferably) eliminating the word entirely, I think. -Seventh Holy Scripture (talk) 13:36, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I say give them equal billing then. It's Keiichi more than anyone that has the power to defeat fate, but who's fate is it? Rika's, more than anyone else's. Renian (talk) 00:03, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yoigoshi[edit]

This is a category under manga and under DS-exclusive, is there some way to differentiate the title so the same one is not duplicated? What I was thinking was: for DS-exclusive, each of the 3 categories only has a single character, so is it possible we actually don't need separate categories for Yoigoshi or even the unique Kageboshi and Tokihogushi? It would make sense if there were more than one DS-exclusive character for these, but as long as there is only one listed, why not just make the character's name as the category and mention under their description which arc they appear in? Tyciol (talk) 03:41, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ouka Furude?[edit]

Should we add a short paragraph about Ouka? She's Hanyuu's daughter and appeared in episode 4 of Higurashi Rei and in a TIPS in the PS2 game (where her whole face was shown). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.218.37.172 (talk) 01:15, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think a note in Hanyuu's section is enough.-- 06:48, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other Characters[edit]

Shouldn't we add several other characters that appeared in Kai, like Okonogi? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.110.177.184 (talk) 17:08, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hojo spelling[edit]

Based on WP:MOS-ANIME#Characters where it states Characters should be identified by the names used in the official English releases of the series., the name should be romanized as Hojo, not Houjou, as Hojo is the official spelling of the name.-- 23:48, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MangaGamer English name spellings[edit]

As some of us (and you) may know, MangaGamer is releasing an official English translation of the original sound novels under the title of "Higurashi When They Cry." Because it's official, the spellings of the names provided must also be official by my judgment. The only problem is that I don't know how such works would be cited. I do know some of the name spellings are listed on MangaGamer's official website, and those are used in this game, but there are only so many of those.

I also know that the English translation uses the Japanese order of naming, but it's already been unquestionably established that the English ordering must be used on Wikipedia, so that is not an issue.

Furthermore, should this article (and all articles relating primarily to the Higurashi sound novel) be renamed to replace "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" with "Higurashi When They Cry"? Immblueversion (talk) 21:48, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree with your points, as long as their verified with MangaGamer's translation. I also agree about renaming the articles, as it's long overdue.-- 23:02, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as you can see, I took the liberty of adding the direct game sources in the form of video game citations as that is what the sound novels essentially are. But for the renaming of everything, should there be a discussion first, or should they just be moved with no questions asked? Or is this not the time for Wikipedia ethics? Immblueversion (talk) 02:17, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Considering the cut and dry nature of the move proposal, I don't think it has to be discussed in length.-- 03:41, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rika's section[edit]

"In a fight with Shion, Rika eventually turns mad and quickly elevates to stage 3, 4 and 5 of Hinamizawa Syndrome which, makes her commit suicide by stabbing herself in the head many times till she drops dead."

This isn't true. She doesn't turn mad, and she kills herself because Shion was threatening to torture and then kill her and she preferred a quick exit. 213.249.135.36 (talk) 18:38, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Steam Romanization[edit]

For the Steam translation of the Higurashi When They Cry Hou games, there are Us in the characters' names (i.e. Jirou Tomitake, Satoko Houjou). Why don't we use that romanization, since it's the most recent? After all, it was officially published by MangaGamer, who made the previous romanization rules, as stated on the page.
