Need to expand the list to Indians across the globe[edit]

Contributions by Scientists of Indian Origin regularly appear in press. Social media has some useful groups e.g. LinkedIn documenting their findings. These could serve as useful references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Natarajanganesan (talkcontribs) 20:06, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Gayle Ross[edit]

She's Native American, Cherokee to be precise. http://www.ferrum.edu/applit/bibs/ross.htm

Ethnicity lists discussion[edit]

Please see discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) for current discussion of a potential policy to apply to all ethnicity lists on Wikipedia, including this one. JackO'Lantern 20:39, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sunny Leone + Angela Devi[edit]

Information has been requested concerning the inclusion of Sunny Leone and Angela Devi into the list. The criteria most in question for Sunny Leone is that of her citizenship, and for Angela Devi it is her impact on American society. Here is some evidence uncovered from a mediation case, which now seems to be able to go no further as little progress will be made without more evidence.

So, once again, we need evidence that proves Sunny Leone is a citizen of the United States (her role as the Playboy Penthouse of the year, in my opinion at least, shows recognition in the United States). As for Angela Devi, we need evidence that she has had an impact on American Society. Cowman109Talk 18:46, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Random bits of evidence for them fitting the criteria:

"Both of them have been been mentioned on [1]"

"Asia Times Online also has some articles about Angela Devi, and Sunny Leoni. Both of these sites are popular sources for the South Asian region."

An interview with Sunny Leone here Sunny Leone claims "I am getting my citizenship to America this year. I will have dual Canadian/ American..."

Sunny Leone was also Penthouse Pet of the year. From the wiki page of the preceding link: "Sunny Leone Pet of the Month March 2001 - Pet of the Year for 2003"

The Times of India: A link in which Angela Devi and Sunny Leone are mentioned.

I would suggest that until it can be proven these two people fit the criteria they should remain on the talk page for the addition of evidence. Cowman109Talk 19:43, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems as thought Sunny Leone may be an US citizen. According to a weblog post she posted, "Thanks everyone. My family went to Canada before I was born and applied for US Citizenship before I was born. It has taken my family 25years to become citizens. Its a great honor and I never thought I would be so happy about it till I was saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Definitely brought a tear to the eye. Thanks for all your kind thoughts. MUAH!!" The link is at http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=622363. The blog also states that she became an US citizen on 6-16-2006 -131.216.2.83 18:50, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sunny Leone[edit]

I have found a interview that has Sunny Leone state that she gained US citizenship in June 2006. I am in favor of including Sunny Leone to be included in the list of Indian-Americans. The link is found at http://sunnyleone.thumblogger.com/, ande the interview states:

Sunny Leone: My parents came from India about 25 years ago. They applied for American citizenship before I was born. We got our green cards when I was about 15 so it was over 15 years just to start the process. For them, it was something they decided they wanted to do a long time ago. At that age I really didn't have a choice of where we were going to live. I am not sure what everyone else's story is but I came down here because my parents made me.

Big D: Do you consider yourself to be more of a Canadian or an American or Indian because both your parents are from there?

Sunny Leone: Actually, I just became an American citizen in June 2006. It's kind of hard to say because both Canada and here are both very Americanized cultures. It's not like there is a huge difference as far as our cultural backgrounds or the way things are there. There are a few things they have like different food but for the most part I am American or Canadian as the next person. It just so happens that that is where I was born.

Shashi Tharoor[edit]

Is Shashi Tharoor an Indian American? What country does he presently reside in or hold citizenship in? I wanted to start some British Asian/malayali categories, which I though he was, but I just came across this page with him listed under indian american politicians. Please anyone verify if they know, I might go ahead and just include him anyway in the british category--Kathanar 22:13, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--AKWiki 17:11, 4 July 2007 (UTC) His bio on the UN Website says: Shashi Tharoor is a national of India.[reply]

Requirements for Inclusion[edit]

Under the heading of the page, it says "The following is a list of Indian Americans who are famous, have made significant contributions to the American culture or society politically, artistically or scientifically, or have appeared in the news numerous times"

There are several people included on the list who are are not famous, and it can be argued that if they "have made significant contributions to the American culture or society politically, artistically or scientifically, or have appeared in the news numerous times"

By what scale do you measure "significant" or numerous?

Looking at the discussion above, Sunny Leone and Angela Devi and Nicole_Narain should be included. There are some here who would disagree because of the nature of their work (ie. porn). There is enough evidence from mainstream publications such as magazines and newspapers, for their inclusion in this category. If you search Google and other sources, you can see for yourself.

Hey guys... is Eboo Patel should be on this list! supposed to be there? Double check the intro. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.184.67.125 (talk) 15:46, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indian American[edit]

How is this term being applied here? A. People who are U.S. citizens? B. What about the cases where it is unclear whether they are indeed U.S. citizens? C. People who are of Indian heritage or descent, who also happen to live in the U.S.? D. People who are of Indian heritage or descent, and also another group? E. People are labeled as of East Indian origin? F. What if someone lives here and is, but is not a U.S. citizen? Should they be included?

Parminder Nagra[edit]

I've removed Parminder Nagra from the list, as she is not American. She is a British citizen currently living in the US, as she stars in an American TV show. Indisciplined 08:38, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cbreitel (talk) 05:51, 4 May 2008 (UTC)This entry doesn't properly explain the rationale for removing her from the list. A person "currently living in the US" is still considered a US national according to US immigration law. Does she have legal permanent resident status? If she does, why should she not be qualified?[reply]

Amartya Sen[edit]

I'm removing Amartya Sen from the list as he's not American, he's an Indian citizen and holds honorary citizenship from Bangladesh, nothing else. See this 2006 Washington Post article. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 03:11, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've reinstated Amartya Sen. If you feel that his removal is still warranted please explain on this page first, as his removal does not fall under Wikipedia terms. He is currently a Harvard University Professor which is his only current association with any institution. He currently works in the US as well. This warrants him being considered an Indian American. There are several individuals on this list who are not necessarily US citizens. I am not aware that US citizenship is necessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Surag198 (talkcontribs) 21:53, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Freddy Mercury[edit]

He was arguably Indian, being a Parsee from Zanzabar, but an American? I would be proud if such a great artist were American, but the article Freddy Mercury says that he was a British citizen, never an American. Chrisrus (talk) 05:36, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. Doesn't belong here. -SpacemanSpiff 12:55, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Many layers of vandalism interspersed with legit entries. I tried to find a clean version, but not certain. Could someone who knows this article well give it a cleanup? Thanks, VKIL (talk) 17:41, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of people included who do not deserve mentioning. Just because one is a professor at an institution does not mean he or she is a significant person of any sort. Unless they have won a significant award or made some sort of obvious major contribution there is no need to include them in here. It makes very little sense to do so, defeats the purpose of this page, reduces its value, and conflates the concepts of well known figures with minor achievement. This site is not some advertisement for Indian success nor should it be a site for advertising individuals who happen to be Indian.

The page is devolving into nonsense by including folks who happen to own 100 apartments in California (so what?), professors at institutions (what about the other 2000 Harvard professors?), physicians (My father is a physician in this country should he be on it as well?), and so forth. I've heavily cleaned it up by deleting business persons, "researchers", "physicians", and so forth from the page.

I've now started to focus on other members of subgroups such as "other" and "media." Many of these inclusions also fall under the very same noxious categories I explained above. Persons such as "famous yoga instructor" do not warrant inclusion. If this person is truly famous then please include a specific reason why, not just vague referrals. I will no longer comment on the removals as the names removed will not fall under any meaningful categories or under the intended value of Wikipedia.

This is not an advertisement site!

Thanks.Surag198 (talk) 04:08, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cathy Bissoon .... why listed?[edit]

There is nothing within the her BIO entry to suggest that Cathy Bissoon, Federal Judge, is an Indian American. Please provide references. BIO says father is from Puerto Rico and mother is from Trinidad. There is no obvious ties to Indians from Asia.

Sanjay Adhia[edit]

I would like to add Sanjay Adhia, MD (forensic psychiatrist) under physicians as he conducts pro-bono Asylum and Human Trafficking evaluations for Physicians for Human Rights. His information can be confirmed at www.forensicpsychiatrynow.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanjay adhia (talkcontribs) 06:25, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed this listing and blocked the multiple accounts promoting this individual on Wikipedia. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:51, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Academics section[edit]

I'm just wondering why are professors of computer science and engineering and electrical engineering listed under a separate sub-category under the academics section to the other professors category? Shouldn't they be merged into one? --99.245.168.121 (talk) 14:52, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
