According to the information given in this article, either the formula is incorrect or the description is incorrect.

If the description is correct (which I suspect is true), then the formula should be TB = H + (2*2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR).

Otherwise, if the formula is correct, the weighting would be:

1 for first base, 1 for second base, 2 for third base and 3 for fourth base.

Will someone with some time please correct this mistake.

Your mistake here is that H is not a single, it is any type of hit. A HR is worth four bases, but one of them has already been counted in the H so we only multiply by three. Same logic for 2B and 3B. →Vik Reykja 22:47, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected the weights to reflect the essence of the definition, rather than the coefficients. As mentioned previously, H = 1B + 2B + 3B + HR, therefore TB = 1B + (2*2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR), or TB = 1B + 2B + 2B + 3B + (2*3B) + HR + (3*HR), or TB = 1B + 2B + 3B + HR + 2B + (2*3B) + (3*HR), or TB = H + 2B + (2*3B) + (3*HR). r. 07:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While I see that this formula makes sense, the fact that I had to check the discussion page to see how is a testament to how unintuitive it is (or how dumb I am :D). Why not just use TB = 1B + (2*2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR)? Singles are not as popular a stat as the rest (generally not displayed as a specific stat), but it does seem much more intuitive. 66.108.185.50 06:09, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Safe Hit?[edit]

What is a 'safe hit'? Please define or link it up.

Safe hit here is synonymous with "hit", as evinced by the stats used in the formula. If it meant anything different than "hit", the formula would reflect that. Subsequently, I am linking the article on that statistic, describing how sacrifices, walks, errors and so on are accounted for.

Differentiate from "total number of bases reached"[edit]

The definition here clearly states that Total Bases only includes bases reached from safe hits. The distinction should be made though that this stat does not include any of the other ways in which a batter can reach base safely, since the name is a bit of a misnomer. Some people might assume (as I did) that Total Bases indicates the number of bases a player has safely reached.

Is there even a recognized stat for this? It seems like there should be, but I don't know what it is. "Times on Base" at least includes some of the other ways a player can reach base, but it's a misnomer too because it also doesn't include every way a batter can reach base. It also does not count extra bases. I guess I'm asking whether there is a stat for: (Total Bases) + (Base on Balls) + (Hit by Pitch) + (Reached by error) + (Fielder's choice) + (stolen bases). Am I missing anything? Thanks
