Puerto Rican?

I'm uncomfortable with the inclusion on all of these lists of people who were not born or raised in them. I can see listing someone born elsewhere but raised in Puerto Rico, for example, but if it is the birthplace of one parent, for example, and that is all, I don't think they should be kept in the list. Geraldo Rivera is such an example. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 11:40, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

  • The list is self-explainatory. You don't have to be born and raised in Puerto Rico to be considered among the Puerto Rican people a "Puerto Rican". There are many so-called stateside Puerto Ricans who love the island more then some of those who are from the island. Most of this sentiment has come about as a direct result of the racist practices and sentiment against the people of Puerto Rican heritiage by the non-Puerto Rican elements in the United States. If you are of Puerto Rican heritage, you will be labeled a "Puerto Rican" in the U.S.. In the island, there are many people who have resided there for many years and who embrace the ways of the Puerto Rican people as their own and as such call themselves Puerto Rican. Geraldo Rivera proudly considers himself a Puerto Rican and identifies himself as such. Is Obama not "Black" or African-American" because his mother is "White"? We are not here to judge who is and who is not Puerto Rican. That is why we have a criteria which must be met. Let's leave the politics out of this please. Tony the Marine (talk) 14:51, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Tony is right. If the U.S. Census Bureau asks people to self-identify themselves as Puerto Ricans even on the mainland, then people of Puerto Rican ancestry should be kept on list. I don't see Cubans, Mexicans, or any other Latino nationality degrading their countrymen, whether born in their respective countries or abroad.--XLR8TION (talk) 18:50, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Very true. Wikipedia is not about what we like or do not like. It is not about being comfortable or uncomfortable. A case in question is Freddie Prince Jr.. His grandmother is Puerto Rican, Yet, he embraces his heritage to the point that he has publicly stated that he is "Puerto Rican". In an interview with Jay S. Jacobs, he stated the following: "I’m here. I’m like any other Puerto Rican, we’re here. You don’t want us here? I know, it’s okay." Therefore, who are we to say otherwise? Antonio Martin (talk) 21:53, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Pablo Casals

  • User:Parkwells, your statements, such as "Delete Pablo Casals - don't be ridiculous; he was born in and grew up in Spain"[1] are not appreciated. What is wrong with you? Pablo Casals' mother was a native Puerto Rican. He exiled himself to Puerto Rico, he was a long-term resident who made the island his home, married a Puerto Rican girl and died there where he is buried. This list is very clear in that it includes long-term residents and/or immigrants of other ethnic heritages who have made Puerto Rico their home. Read the "instruction of inclussion" or at least the above statements before insulting other editors with your remarks Tony the Marine (talk) 17:56, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Page name

Wouldn't it make more sense to rename the page to "List of Notable Puerto Ricans"? The title is pretty vague as is, and its vagueness was the only reason I clicked it. Seohyunnie91 (talk) 19:24, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Exactly, I agree with you 110% and so does the majority of the Puerto Rican Wikipedia community, We tried that once (see the "Consensus" section above) and we changed the name, but the know-it-alls in Wikipedia made a big issue about it and decided the words such as "notable" or "famous" were not to be used on the "lists". "Famous" I can understand, because a person can be "Famous" in his block and nowhere else, but "Notable" is a phrase that has to be back up by sources and would be justified in the title. Oh well, que se va hacer? Tony the Marine (talk) 21:31, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
    • Yet the very first sentence of the article is, "This is a list of notable Puerto Ricans". Seohyunnie91 (talk) 12:22, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
  • I know, I believe that all the lists of notable people, unlike lists of places and things, should be titled as such. Since it isn't allowed I wanted to make sure that our readers had it clear that not everybody can be on the list. Wikipedia doesn't have a problem with the word "notable" in the paragraph because that what the people listed are, but for some unknown reason (at least to me) Wikippedia seems to have a problem with placing "notable" on the title. You go figure. To me it doesn't make any sense. Tony the Marine (talk) 17:53, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Splitting this article into multiple articles

 Discussion ongoing...
We are trying to determine if this article should be split or not, and if split, how should we split it. The article is over 100 kB big in wikitext alone, and includes several pictures as well when rendered in HTML. Policies that apply include WP:TOOBIG, WP:STANDALONE, WP:SUMMARY, and WP:SYNC. Options are:

  1. we leave the article as it is and don't split it,
  2. we split the article into two articles, namely List of Puerto Ricans, Part 1 and List of Puerto Ricans, Part 2, per User:Marine 69-71's suggestion below,
  3. we split the article into several different articles each hosting a particular list, per the suggestion below by User:Ahnoneemoos, or
  4. any other reasonable option not covered here.

Relevant projects for this matter include WP:PUR, WP:WPBIO, and WP:WPLISTS.

Ahnoneemoos (talk) 02:43, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Agree Article is over 100 kB and should be split per WP:TOOBIG. Thoughts? Suggestions? See comments below. --Jax 0677 (talk) 12:14, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Idea: Technically it isn't an article, it is a list. That being said, I can split the list into two (2) lists, "List of Puerto Ricans Part 1" and "List of Puerto Ricans Part 2". I can also create a disambiguation page which can be of help for all the articles which have the "List of Puerto Ricans" wikilinks. I can do it if there are no objects. To make sure that ther are no objections, I will give the community at least 5 days to express themselves. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:44, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Comment: Tony, I think the convention on this matter is to separate by first letter rather than by number; see WP:NCLL. So we would have:
and so on until List of Puerto Ricans, Z for people whose last name starts with 'Z'. The format of the list would be the same one that it has today except that each sublist will only contain the surnames that start with that letter.
Ahnoneemoos (talk) 08:14, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
 Discussion ongoing...
See my comment below. It would be better to simply make this an article that points to several lists. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 23:45, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Agree per WP:NCLL and WP:TOOBIG. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 08:14, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Comment: We can also do like List of Americans and separate it by occupation like this:

and so on. People could be in more than one list.
Ahnoneemoos (talk) 11:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
The list format is fine as is and we do not want any complications. User:XLR8TION and I are the among the few people who have taken it upon ourselves to managing the list and to verifing every entery. I am against spitting this list into multiple little lists because it will be a hassle to keep tabs on all of them. I was thinking in dividing the list in half such as: "List of Puerto Ricans Part 1", which would include the following categories "Actors, actresses, comedians and directors, Architects, Authors, playwrights and poets, Beauty queens and fashion models, Business people and industrialists, Cartoonists, Civil rights and/or political activists, Composers, musicians and singers" and then the other half: "List of Puerto Ricans Part 2" which would include the categories "Criminals and outlaws, Diplomats, Educators, Governors, Historians, Journalists, Judges and law enforcement, Military, Physicians, scientists and inventors, Politicians, Religion, Sports, Taínos, Visual Artists, Miscellaneous". It wouldn't require a lot of work and it would be more practical. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:58, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Tony, I think the best thing would be to issue an RFC on this as I believe it would be best to we get rid of this list completely and instead make it an article that points to other lists like List of Americans does. I have issued an RFC so that we can get more eyes on this. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 23:45, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Comment: Ahnoneemoos, I fully understand what you are saying, however I do not agree with you. You known that I value your contributions, however, in the past you have splitted other articles despite the objections of others. This list can not be compared with the "List of Americans". You are talking about the United States, a nation whose population reaches over a billion and has hundreds of notable people. Puerto Rico is a small island of 4 million people with 4 million more in the USA. This list follows the format of the list of people of other Latin American countries, example: List of Cubans and List of Mexicans. This list has been here for many years and has been well managed. I think that to state that "we get rid of this list completely" is an insult to all the editors who have day and night taken care of it. The issue here was that the list was "too long" not the splitting of the list into a bunch of small lists. I have presented a practical solution which would solve the "too long" issue, however you have listed this in the "RFC" which will create a prolonged discussion on a simple matter. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:12, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Tony, I won't be splitting this article for now so don't worry about that. That's why I issued an RFC. I strongly believe that getting more eyes on this matter would be best. So let's just wait and see what other people not affiliated with the subject believe is best. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 02:22, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Idea: I would like to propose the following "One-Two Punch Plan" option:

(1) That the article be kept but that it be turned into a list of (not names but) wikilinks to other lists, and (2) that those "other lists" include the following list articles:

As can be seen, some of these lists are already active. The remaining lists should be easy to develop since virtually all would be simple copy/pastes from this existing article here.

My name is Mercy11 (talk) 01:05, 5 January 2013 (UTC), and I approve this message.

Agree except for:
Ahnoneemoos (talk) 05:12, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Comment. Just to clarify: IMO everyone should agree, in principle, on a "One-Two Punch Plan" like the one I proposed above and then work on details like yours. When I made the list above I was just trying to get others to perceive where I was proposing we could head down the road, in particular to show that no notable Puerto Rican fell thru the cracks. (Note: We still need to work on proposing a solution for including the list of "Miscellaneous" Puerto Ricans.). Ahnoneemoos, you and I are basically on the same track on this "Part Two" of a "One-Two Punch Plan"; but we shouldn't let the details of how many lists we will actually end up with keep us (everyone, that is) from reaching agreement. Also, I may be wrong, but perhaps Tony would be open to considering a One-Two Punch Plan like this one... My name is Mercy11 (talk) 14:34, 5 January 2013 (UTC), and I approve this message.
  • Comment - You know the idea doesn't seem too bad. You guys do what is right. Ahnoneemoos, I thought that we were friends and now you have recommended that my admin. powers be taken away Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Administrator_deleted_article_to_make_way_to_a_manual_restore.3B_article.27s_history_lost_in_the_middle. That is really sad. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:26, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Summoned by RFCbot. I like Option 3. Think of it from the point of view of an average Internet user; topical lists would be much more useful than arbitrarily splitting the list or maintaining the current list that is too big. Andrew327 18:08, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Comment I support option 3 as well. Avoiding an arbitrary split is idea, and this one makes the most sense. The article is definitely too big as is. Dreambeaver(talk) 18:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support Option 3—a list this long is too long to be useful. Why not just include the entire population of Puerto Rico, past and present. You add someone to a list so that they will stand out, and once the list gets to a certain size, that purpose is no longer being served. Either pare down the list, or split it in some meaningful way. Splitting it in two is not meaningful, and doesn't actually solve the problem of the list being too long. Abhayakara (talk) 00:53, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support option 3 - There are only two options: break it into alphabetical sub-lists (which is option 2, I think); or break it into occupation sublists (option 3). The occupational sublists seem more reader-friendly. --Noleander (talk) 16:24, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Comment: - While it is easy to suggest what option would be the best way to go, it is not an easy task. I want to make the following suggestions.

First - the person who creates the spin-off lists should have the same in his/her "watchlist" and should be in charge of the list's maintenance. For years we have maintained this list to its high standard.

Second - the creator of the list's should make sure that the names in the list's are sourced, otherwise you will have a situation such as the "List of Puerto Rican comedians" which has an ugly "unsourced tag" which question the reliability of the same. You will have people add names that should not be in the list, such as "Sammy Davis, Jr." who did not have an once of Puerto Rican blood in his veins and who was once in the list. You will have people add their own names solely for self-promotional purposes, see:[2] (note: the list has since been fixed, thanks to the excellent job done by User:Mercy11.)

Third - the list should have an introduction that will keep it from being boring or lame. The introduction should be interesting to the reader. An example of what I mean of an interesting list is "List of Puerto Rican military personnel". It is easy to create a list and let others do all of the work. It shouldn't be that way, who ever creates the list should put some work into it.

That is muy humble opinion, buena suerte - Tony the Marine (talk) 20:00, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Puerto Rican recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom

I would suggest that we include a category of Puerto Rican recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and, perhaps, the Presidential Citizens Medal. The names in these categories would be repetitive because they would also appear in the predominant category in which they now appear.

This/these categories would make it easy for a user to identify Puerto Rican recipients without having to go through the hundreds of recipients nationally.

Puerto Rico already has 9 MoF recipients (in chronological order):

Pau Casals '63 Luis Muñoz Marín '63 (with Distinction) Luis A. Ferré '91 Antonia Pantojas '96 M. Isolina Ferré '99 Roberto Clemente '03 (posthumously) Rita Moreno '04 Chita Rivera '09 Sylvia Méndez '11

Puerto Rico also has Citizens Medal recipients, including Victoria Soto today.

Any discussion? Pr4ever (talk) 04:35, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

  • It is a geat idea. Roberto Clemente (1973) (Posthumous) and Helen Rodriguez-Trias (2001) were also awarded the Citizens Medal. I'll work on the categories soon. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:13, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of gallery images

I have reverted unexplained attempts to remove images at the bottom of this article, and I am currently up to three reverts in 24 hours. I give notice here that I first identified this as vandalism and I may continue to revert, because this is a permitted exception to the WP:3RR rule. Images of other notable people are alongside the list, and the ones in the gallery are in the list. So there should not be discrimination. It would be visually unattractive to put all the images on the right margin. --Greenmaven (talk) 20:56, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Both are same-provider anonymous IP addresses. Obviously the same user using different PCs at the same library, cafe, etc. Also noticed it was a single logon into Wikipedia to perform a single act vandalism on this single article. Mercy11 (talk) 23:03, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Why is Jessica Steffens in this list? Her article does not say she is Puerto Rican anything. Mercy11 (talk) 02:51, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

I have added Rosario Morales and Aurora Levins Morales to the Puerto Rican authors' category. I hope these articles are of general interest.--Lawrlafo (talk) 20:02, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Proposal for Drastic Revision

This list uses a huge amount of bandwidth and pages. It is THE longest list article, BY FAR, I've ever seen. Each of the entries has his/her own article. This is humongous vanity piece for Borinqueno/as. I propose to whittle it down to an ordinary list page. Tapered (talk) 02:55, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

People born in Puerto Rico whom do not identify as Puerto Ricans.

Today I was reviewing the listing of people from Puerto Rico and noticed that an important historical figure in the Taino Indian Movement of Puerto Rico was removed from the listing of people of Puerto Rico. This person whom is identified as Taino Indian and one of the original 1968 founding Fathers of the Taino Indian Movement of Puerto Rico often referred to as "The Don Pedro of the Taino Indians" by his family and whom was born in the town of Orocovis in the central mountains of Puerto Rico in the year 1951 of whom is Taino mestizo Indian parents. He has had a place in the history of Puerto Rico by his decades long involvement in the political island struggled of the indigenous Civil Rights movement in Puerto Rico and now he is no longer listed. Was this action taken by the promoters of the "List of Puerto Ricans" page or was it done as an a deliberate act of Wikipedia vandalism by a non-Wikipedia member? The person whom I am speaking of is a known Taino Indian Nationalist of Puerto Rico and a well known Native Civil Rights Activist by the name of Don Pedro Guanikeyu Torres.

Can we add the artist Prince to this list?

I know I read in a rollingstone interview in the 80s that he considers himself PR. A couple of years ago I tried to confirm this online and I found a phone conversation on the George Lopez show where he called himself His ‘Puerto Rican Brother From Another Mother’. The below link seems to have it backwards.

http://www.vibe.com/2011/04/peep-prince-calls-george-lopez-his-puerto-rican-brother-another-mother/

The video is down but I feel I am correct. Besides the fact he is usually referred as black but his appearance is latino.

This article describes the phrase used on the phone conversation correctly:

  • Does Prince belong in the list? Absolutely not. Prince does not have an ounce of Puerto Rican blood in his body. If he did, do you not think that such an idol such as Prince would not have been acclaimed by the people of Puerto Rico as one of their own. Do you not think that Puerto Rico would be mourning his death? Just because he stated the he "considers himself Puerto Rican" does not mean a thing. You can consider yourself a Martian and it does not mean that you are one. In the past many notable entertainers have even falsely stated that they were Puerto Rican when they were not. Among them Sammy Davis Jr. (Cuban) and John Leguizamo (Colombian).

That Prince looks "Latino"? Now, that is stereotyping. What does a "Latino" really look like? Latinos come in every shape, color, religious background and so on. There are Latinos with white, brown, black, yellow and all tones of skin color. Just because someone assumes that you look "Latino" does not mean that you are one and much less that you are Puerto Rican.

That George Lopez stated that Prince was "his Puerto Rican brother from another mother" as part of his script does not mean a thing. It is a script written by someone in his show and as such Lopez must go along with it. I have seen movies where actors have played the roles of other nationalities not their own. Tony the Marine (talk) 15:53, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

I did not mean to be offensive. I happen to think Prince looks Puerto Rican (my own opinion). The article is wrong and I wish there was a way to verify the tape. Prince definitely called himself "his Puerto Rican brother from another mother", not the other way around. SneakLion (talk) 17:18, 29 April 2016 (UTC)Sneak

    • It is O.K., I know that you didn't mean to be offensive. As a matter of fact when my son I began this list many years ago, I made a research of Princes' heritage and did find anything to indicate that he was a "Boricua". In regard to what a Puerto Rican really looks like, I would like to invite you to read this article "Cultural diversity in Puerto Rico" which is one of many that I have written on the subject. Clean up sweep

When the list was first created we didn't include a rule or rules of inclusion. In 2008, I together with RayLast to check and verify every entry on the .

The idea behind the clean-up sweep is to remove non-notables who do not have a reliable verifiable source after a verification with a google search.

Note: Some names will be removed because there is no proof that said person has Puerto Rican blood. However, anyone may re-add names which have been removed from the list as long as they provide a reliable source as proof of notability or that said person is Puerto Rican (including non-Puerto Ricans who have made the island their homeland) or of Puerto Rican descent.

Those who qualified for inclusion were left on the list and then we added the "the rules of inclusion" to be followed. That is why some names do not have a reference, the references are within the article and those who were included after the acceptance of the "rules of inclusion" have them. Puerto Rican Citizenship Not Clear

The sentence "The Government of Puerto Rico has been issuing "Certificates of Puerto Rican Citizenship" to anyone born in Puerto Rico or to anyone born outside of Puerto Rico with at least one parent who was born in Puerto Rico since 2007" needs more context or should be eliminated (see source). It can be misleading. The reference is in Spanish and explains the limited nature of this certificate.--Lawrlafo (talk) 16:00, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Added under "Civil rights and/or political activists", including reference to her New York Times obituary.--Lawrlafo (talk) 02:54, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

add Darcia Narvaez to the list

Please add me to your list under Educators or under Scientists: [1] It would be an honor.Dfnarvaez (talk) 18:53, 26 August 2021 (UTC)Darcia Narvaez

  • It would be nice to add your name. Question: are you Puerto Rican or do you Puerto Rican heritage? Here are some of the established rules for inclusion:

As of 2008, each addition to the list must also provide a reliable verifiable source which cites the person's notability and/or the person's link to Puerto Rico, otherwise the name will be removed.

Note: Websites such as Wikipedia, IMDb, You Tube, Facebook, MySpace and personal websites which anyone can edit are not considered reliable verifiable sources per Wikipedia policy, see: reliable sources Tony the Marine (talk) 02:24, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Add Hector Abruña to the List of Puerto Ricans

Tito Abruña is the Emile M. Chamot Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University. He was elected to the NAS in 2018: http://www.nasonline.org/member-directory/members/2540456.html. I think he would make a good addition to this list. That link to his NAS page also notes that he was born in Puerto Rico. 130.132.173.198 (talk) 19:13, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
