Good list[edit]

We need to find the appropriate references such as the dictionary listings to validate these entries.RaveenS 23:13, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Give reasons why this is an encylopedia artile not just a list of words. Describe how Sinhalese came about these words, there effect etc.RaveenS 13:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some of these words are from other languages[edit]

I list them here because they might be added back by some other people.

  • birōva Bureau Bureau
From Dutch. This is evident from the [i]< Dutch [y]
  • bōlaya Ball Ball
looks very Portuguese to me
  • departamentuva Department Department
should also be Portuguese because of the dental [t], the [a] before the [m] and the ending in [u]
  • distrikkaya District District
Either Portuguese or Dutch because of dental [t]. If it were from English, it would be disʈrikkaya. I think it is Dutch because in Portuguese, there is no <c> as of now (although there was 500 years ago.)
  • komisama Comission Comission
Also Portuguese, because of the -m, derived from -ão
  • kompāsuva Compass Compass
Portuguese because of the [u]
  • kōcciya Train Coach
might rather be from Portuguese coche
  • läyistuva List List
Is clearly from Dutch lijst
  • petsama Petition Petition
Is probably Portuguese because of the dropped vowel and the ending in a nasal
