We should keep footnotes to an absolute minimum. It is highly significant that Carron didn't become an MP in 1982, but merely began using a different description of his affiliation. Name of this article[edit]

Are they technically MPs?[edit]

I had heard that the people elected on the Sinn Féin ticket are not technically Members of Parliament. If that is the case then this should be spelt out.

What I heard was that when you win an election you become an elected representative and that you only actually become a Member of Parliament when you swear the oath of allegiance (to the crown). As most people who are elected go on to take the oath and become MPs the difference is not normally worth making and so they are referred to as MPs from the moment they win their election

As members of Sinn Féin won't take such an oath they would not technically be MPs.

In most cases it would not be helpful to call the Sinn Féin representatives anything other than MPs. However if what I have suggested is true then on this page it probably makes sense to include it.
