Source for species list[edit]

Unfortunately, there's no indication in the article of where the bulk of the species list came from. Looking at the article history, it seems that this edit added most of the list; the edit comment says "update to ELEVENTH EDITION (2008) of Bromeliad Binomial by Harry Luther", so this was presumably the main source, although not shown as a reference. The current version appears to be here, and is said to be based on the Encyclopedia of Bromeliads database (see below).

As of 3 September 2021, there are notable differences between lists from different sources. As an example, I looked at the species lists for the genus in Plants of the World Online (PoWO) and the Encyclopedia of Bromeliads (EB). Allowing for minor differences in hyphenation and spelling, I found that 636 species (including hybrid species) appeared in both, 15 in PoWO only and 74 in EB only. Part of the last figure is explained by PoWO putting species in Vriesea that EB puts in Tillandsia. The taxonomy of Tillandsioideae, including the division into genera, remains problematic, it seems (see e.g. doi:10.1111/cla.12200). So I'm reluctant to try to update the species list, because I'm not clear what source(s) should be used. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:57, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
