February 2017 Louisiana tornado[edit]

Support split At EF3 intensity, this was the most powerful tornado to ever impact New Orleans, so upon further consideration a small article involving the meteorological setup and a detailed description of the damage path would be good. However, there seems to be some confusion about what this event actually was. You are saying "tornado" as in a singular event, which also caused a problem with the title. That is not what happened here; this was an outbreak of at least 11 separate tornadoes. The tornado that hit Donaldsonville was entirely separate from the tornado that struck New Orleans, and the Mississippi tornadoes were entirely separate from the Louisiana tornadoes. Since the most significant tornado of the event was the New Orleans EF3, it could be called potentially be called "2017 New Orleans, Louisiana Tornado", with a detailed section on the main tornado along with a table of the other tornadoes. However, the best title would likely be something to the effect of "February 7, 2017 tornado outbreak". Screven94 (talk) 00:17, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Screven94[reply]

Oppose - At this point, there have been less than a dozen tornadoes confirmed, with the only truly notable tornado being the one that affected New Orleans East. I believe relevant information can be contained to the monthly list and subsection on the main Tornadoes of 2017 page. However, if a majority of project members support the creation of an article, I would at least ask that it contains more information than just a copied table from the monthly list before publication. I should clarify that I'm opposed to having an article for the outbreak as a whole, which was implied by adding the tornado table for the entire day. I am not opposed to having an article for the New Orleans tornado itself, but again, I would ask that one not be made until the draft is in decent shape. Support split - This was the strongest tornado recorded in the New Orleans area according to both the SPC and Tornado History Project. There were no fatalities, but there were 25 non-fatal casualties - five times more than the 2011 St. Louis, Missouri tornado, which warranted its own article mainly for being the strongest tornado in St. Louis since 1967, while this was the first intense tornado in the city of New Orleans since at least 1950 as well as the longest-tracked in the same period. --Anonymous Macaw (talk) 01:56, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comment – If an article is recreated for the New Orleans tornado, the city's name should be explicitly noted in the article's title (e.g. 2017 New Orleans tornado). Support split - but don't do right away! Wait till we get more info. "February 2017 Louisiana tornado", the main part of the event, eventually should get an article per (as mentioned) "strongest tornado recorded in the New Orleans area" ever. Support article for New Orleans tornado, Oppose an "outbreak" article. If you want to split this, model it after 2013 Hattiesburg, Mississippi tornado. Support article split - this tornado is clearly worth having a seperate article made for it, as it caused significant, long lasting impacts on the areas hit. Also, as repeatably mentioned, it is the strongest tornado to have ever hit New Orleans, which is another excellent reason to do so. Edit: I noticed a comment about creating an outbreak article as well for the February 7 event, and to be honest, id also support that, as a lot of tornadoes impacted highly populated areas in Mississippi and Louisiana during the outbreak, and lives were lost. Support I strongly suggest that this article be made. After all, the tornado was the strongest tornado recorded in Orleans Perish since records began in 1950. Also, the tornado is significant since it caused structural damage to a government facility. However, I do think that we should make an article for the entire outbreak, since the New Orleans East Tornado wasn't the only significant tornado of the outbreak. Support Article for the New Orleans tornado. Oppose article for the outbreak. I am in agreement with United States Man. The outbreak appears to have been rather small and the only tornado of particular note is the New Orleans tornado. Altogether this seems to have been quite similar to the Hattiesburg event in 2013. Tornadoes of 2017[edit]

@Millionsandbillions: It contains a list of all tornadoes, not just notable events. This includes isolated tornadoes that wouldn't otherwise be mentioned on the main page so we can keep the main Tornadoes of 2017 article at a more reasonable size and continue to include non-US events more effectively. Ongoing Svere Event[edit]
