Estonian Division's insignia[edit]

Excerpt from chapter Estonian units in the Waffen-SS by Toomas Hiio and Peeter Kaasik in Estonia 1940–1945: Reports of the Estonian International Commission for the Investigation of Crimes Against Humanity issued in year 1999 in Tallinn:

"On 21 April 1943, the Estonian members of the Legion were forbidden by Augsberger, Commander of the SS-Estonian Legion, to wear the SS-insignia on their collar. On 19 May 1943, permission for this was only granted to those Estonians in the Legion who had graduated from Bad Tölz cadet school. From then on the question of the emblem identifying the Estonian SS-units remained unclear. In 1944, some members of the 20th Estonian SS-Division wore the SS insignia on their collar, while the rest wore the identifying emblem of the Estonian SS-units, which depicted an arm clutching a sword with a stylised letter E above it. Harald Riipalu writes in his memoirs that the emblem was designed by the Estonians themselves in autumn 1943, before goint to the front at Nevel. In February 1944, when the I battalion of the 45th Regiment, commanded by Riipalu, arrived in Tartu, the mayor of Tartu, Karl Keerdoja, on behalf of the town, presented the regiment with emblems made to this design. These had been manufactured in the medical engineering workshop in Tartu. In June 1944, the emblems designed by the SS-Leadership Main Office finally arrived at the front. However, as some battalions were already wearing the emblems designed in Estonia, it was decided that these should remain the identifying emblem of the 20th SS-Division." Vaino Kallas in his Kahe sõja vahel (Between Two Wars), 2007, Pärnu, quotes a document signed by Himmler and addressed to the Estonian Division (my loose translation): "I hereby endorse the insignia of the Estonian 20th Waffen Grenadier Division as an armoured hand holding a sword, crooked around the letter 'E'." --Jaan Pärn (talk) 07:34, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charlemagne Division insignia[edit]

If the change is to be kept, I suggest to still have the post-war made one on the page as a piece of trivia as that insignia is still a piece of history associated with the division. MSTVD (talk) 17:29, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Division insignias[edit]

Majority of the divisional insignias with the shields displayed on this page were made up post-war by groups like the HIAG, mainly Friedrich Husemann. There is no mention of this on any page I could find, and I find this to be misleading, as people could believe these symbols were actually used during the war. Recreating these symbols based on pictures of genuine vehicle identification insignia would be ideal. LloydGrasm3 (talk) 02:39, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have now added some of the accurate versions of the insignias to the page and removed the stylized black and white shields, which are post-war fabrications. These versions are also the ones used on the division's individual wiki pages. There is still some inaccurate ones remaining on the page, like Nibelungen, for instance. If there are objections to this I'd like there to be a discussion about it here rather than an edit war. LloydGrasm3 (talk) 13:02, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
