The Western Front-Flanders[edit]

Have taken note of tags. Perhaps article could be split into two; The Yser and the Ypres Salient. I will try to address the "orphan" issue and the question of a lead article.

Belligerents[edit]

The list of Belligerents seems to be missing everyone in the Entente powers and allies except Belgium and France. -- 70.24.248.246 (talk) 05:51, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Western Front- FlandersFlanders on the Western Front during World War One – The current title is unworkable, so I propose using a descriptive title. 70.24.248.246 (talk) 05:53, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Rename to Flanders in World War I. However, this is currently a complete mess of an article and needs a massive rewrite to make it even viable. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:45, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment Per the discussion below, this doesn't cover anything other than memorials and the front line areas, and its battles, so doesn't actually cover Flanders in WWI, as it doesn't cover the areas not on the front lines. If you compare it to Ireland and World War I or Hungary in World War I you see that the scope of this article is much more limited than "Flanders in WWI" -- 70.24.248.246 (talk) 03:20, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Any additional comments:
  • Query / suggestion: Would Flanders during World War I suffice?
If "World War I/One" is to become part of a new name, I'd suggest "World War I", as this seems to be Wikipedia's default description. CsDix (talk) 22:59, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • The issue of "I vs One" is not important to me, so if people prefer the roman numeral, that's also fine by me. -- 70.24.248.246 (talk) 23:07, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Flanders during WWI" would seem to include the entire Flanders and not just the front, but the coverage of the article currently is just the front, not the behind the front areas. -- 70.24.248.246 (talk) 23:07, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • Is / was the description "Flanders Front" used (hence Flanders Front during World War I)..?
Alternatively, on another tack, how about "Western Front in Flanders (19xx–19xx)"?
(I see that the page's principal infobox is for the Battle of the Yser during October 1914 alone, so I'm guessing that needs moving and/or replacing with something (much) more wide-ranging..?) CsDix (talk) 04:41, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • A bit depends on what the article is intended to cover; as it stands, it seems to involve a small amount of history, and large sections on war memorials, a lot of stray pictures, along with some, probably misplaced, poems etc. quoted at length. If renamed as Flanders Front during World War I (or similar), I suspect much of this would need to be deleted or moved to a more relevant article. Hchc2009 (talk) 17:50, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • If that's correct – I have to admit I haven't read through the whole article yet – then what would you call the more relevant article? (Perhaps that should be the name to which the present article is moved.) CsDix (talk) 00:29, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • "WWI War memorials in Flander" would come closest, I suppose. Hchc2009 (talk) 08:59, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • As the writer of the article I would like to comment on the proposed changes to the title. When I worked at the National Archives in Kew I took several weeks out in 2005 and travelled along the line of the Western Front. My main interest was the memorials and monuments which were located along that front line. I then wrote a series of articles for "Your archives" and called these "War Memorials and Cemeteries- Artois" etc etc. I wrote articles which covered the front line from Nieuwpoort to the Swiss border. I recently looked at these articles afresh and thought there was scope to repeat them for wikipedia but in a much more detailed way. Perhaps the best title for wikipeda would be "War Memorials and Cemeteries-Flanders". I intend to now write further articles to cover the whole front line and will use the Flanders article as a template. Necrothesp will no doubt be dismayed to read this and indeed all the comments made thus far are unflattering but I shall persevere!

To repeat then, the purpose of the article is to describe some of the memorials and cemeteries along the Western Front and to try to put them in context and write just a little about the person or event which they relate to.

Weglinde (talk) 12:30, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is to be the template for a longer series, Weglinde, would it be worth getting some feedback on the current article and its structure (either informally here, or through a peer review) before extending the series? I'm sure folks would be happy to help. Hchc2009 (talk) 13:45, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds a good idea. I welcome any feedback.

Weglinde (talk) 16:49, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • A few thoughts:
  • Worth having a look at MOS:IMAGES, which gives advice on how to place and size them. I've gone through fixed most of the ones in this article; give me a shout if it's not clear why.
  • Also worth having a look at the advice in the MOS about the number of images in an article.
  • Structurally, I'd consider thinking about what you want the topic of the article to be. If its war memorials and cemeteries in Flanders, then the title, lead and content should all reflect that. You might want a bit of a context section about the conflict itself, but that then needs to explain to the reader what they need to know in order to best understand the rest of the article. It also needs to be referenced.
  • Structurally, watch out for stubby, one or two sentence sections. They usually mean that either the section is too narrow; or the section isn't fully describing the issue; or that perhaps it would have been better off in a list.
  • I'd consider whether you really want to writing "War Memorials and Cemeteries in Flanders" or a "List of War Memorials and Cemeteries in Flanders". If the former, then I'd expect to see more expert analysis from secondary sources about the whole topic (as opposed to memorial by memorial), and less lists in the article.
  • Keep an eye out for non-encylopaedic language - WP: WORDS may help here.
  • I'd usually avoid long quotes from poems or inscriptions, unless vital to the article and backed up in detail by secondary commentary. Hchc2009 (talk) 17:51, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for these helpful notes. I think that I will go for the "List of War Memorials and Cemeteries in Flanders". I am not sure how to change the articles title and would be grateful if you could do this for me. I will then make any changes that I think necessary to what is then a listing.

I have already seen what you have done with the images and am quite happy with the outcome. I shall try to keep to this discipline for future listings as I work along the Western Front. I will also try to avoid non-encyclopaedic language. Etc.etc.

Again thank you for your help.

Weglinde (talk) 21:59, 2 January 2013 (UTC)]][reply]

Given that the article is now a listing would it be possible to leave my paragraphs on the Battle of the Yser and the five Battles of Ypres. I feel these explain why memorials were erected but are they overlong for a listing?

Weglinde (talk) 22:15, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just to check, are there any objections for this being renamed "List of war memorials and cemeteries in Flanders"? It's Weglinde's preference, and it would seem to fit well with the subject matter. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:47, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the memorials/cemeteries are only World War I, should that be "List of World War I memorials and cemeteries in Flanders"..? CsDix (talk) 13:26, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would be quite happy with "List of World War 1 memorials and cemeteries in Flanders".

Weglinde (talk) 19:46, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Moved. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:00, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's splendid. I am most obliged. I shall now continue the series with this main title. I shall now look through the article again and try to improve it further. Your help has been much appreciated. Weglinde (talk) 09:35, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody please add the Welsh Memorial Park, Ypres to this article? Thanks. ViennaUK (talk) 12:29, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of the Ploegsteert memorial on a page about memorials in Flanders[edit]

It seems strange that a memorial found in Wallonia is included on a page titled 'List of World War I memorials and cemeteries in Flanders'.

Ploegstreet is situated in Wallonia, in the Comines-Warneton municipality of the Hainaut province. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.6.176.27 (talk) 09:04, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
