"The"[edit]

We have another article titled "List of ambassadors of the Solomon Islands to the United States". These articles should be consistently titled, no? Either we include "the" on both, or neither. And why not List of ambassadors of United States to Solomon Islands and List of ambassadors of Solomon Islands to United States? The "official name" of (the) United States is just United States. Personally I think the "the" is just included because that's good grammar. Clearly "the" is not part of the official name of either country or we would have List of ambassadors of The United States to The Solomon Islands. – wbm1058 (talk) 01:18, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with wbm1058. I have no idea what the 'official' name of the United States is and will defer, but for Solomon Islands the dropping of 'the' was intentional at independence to distance itself from their colonial era, (like 'The Ukraine' back in Soviet days). The SI Constitution removes the definite article. The national anthem omits it. The Governor General is appointed as GG of Solomon Islands, Elizabeth II was Queen of Solomon Islands, now Charles III the King of. I have spoken with the previous US Ambassador and he certainly knew that he was appointed Ambassador to Solomon Islands and that it was rude to use the other term. However, the main problem is that almost all the other SI articles are consistent with using 'the' pre-independence, or making a distinction between 'The Solomon Islands archipelago', which includes bits of other countries, and the nation state of 'Solomon Islands', which is a subset. This article, 'List of ambassadors...' has become an undiplomatic outlier in the many pages dealing with the country. I think there is another List of ambassadors from China that gets it wrong, but that is rare now. Changing the title would bring it into line with the many other articles.
