Special Mention

The 23rd24th entry in the list needs some special mention in that the Madras High Court ruled that J Jayalalithaa's swearing in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was illegal and her rule be declared null and void from the date she assumed office. It further ordered that the decisions taken by her during the said period can be considered for rollback. So, technically, I don't know whether she can be listed as the Chief Minister for the said period without a special mention.

A five-judge Constitution Bench (of the Supreme court), in a unanimous  verdict of 5-0, 
held a person who is convicted for a criminal offence and sentenced to imprisonment 
for a period of not less than two years cannot be appointed the Chief Minister of a 
State under Article 164 (1) read with (4) and cannot continue to function as such. In 
effect, the court rejected the argument that a popular mandate - or the `will' of the 
people - could override the Constitution. 

Holding that her appointment was not legal and valid, Mr. Justice S.P. Bharucha, 
speaking for himself and Mr. Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, said we are satisfied that in the 
appointment of Ms. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister there has been a clear infringement
of a Constitutional provision and that a writ of quo warranto must issue. And 
Mr. Justice G.B. Pattanaik, speaking for himself and Mrs. Justice Ruma Pal, gave a
separate but concurring judgment as did Mr. Justice Brijesh Kumar.

Madras Presidency

AFIK, the state became Tamil Nadu only after 1950. Till then it was Madras Presidency. If someone knows the exact dates, they can enter the info in the article. --Gurubrahma 13:39, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Appointed vs Elected

I think before 1952(?), all CMs were appointed by Governor(or Viceroy). Please add a note to that effect. Universal suffrage came in the sencond-half of 20th century only. Also no election history is available in ECI website. Anwar 20:24, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Colour coding

Question

When India became independent in 1947, Madras Presidency became Madras State, comprising of Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, northern Karnataka, and the southwest coast of Kerala.

Does South-West coast means Malabar ? If yes, it gives the wrong impression because Malabar is now North Kerala. Tintin (talk) 12:02, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Proposal for a split

Copying Nichalp's message on my talk page.

The state of Tamil Nadu was not formed until 1968; the list includes Chief Ministers of Madras Presidency, a province of British India, and those of Madras State, which was formed after Indian independence in 1947, comprising of present day Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

  1. I see a major objection here: Why list incumbents who never held the portfolio "Chief Minister of 'Tamil Nadu"? You'd have to justify the inclusion by using cogent phrases or have them removed.
  2. Non-party: seems odd. Unafflilated?
  3. Comment: 2 more tables can be added: A table on the CMs enjoying the most terms in office (descending), and parties enjoying the most terms in office. This would help clinch votes on the FLC.

I would suggest three lists as per the following page-definitions:

  1. Madras state until 1956 was direct successor of Madras presidency (same territory and people), so that can be one list
  2. Madras state in 1956-68 was just renamed Tamil Nadu in 1968. Again, they are the same and make for one list
  3. A separate list for 'Madras state' (1947-68) to be created by culling from the above lists; write-up to make clear the change in borders that this state underwent in 1956.

Nominated CMs and periods of Presidents Rule can be marked differently in all lists. IMO, the three lists should be created as three different pages, cross-referenced, with a section in the Tamil Nadu page providing the umbrella narrative of history. Regards, ImpuMozhi 18:05, 26 May 2006 (UTC)


The current presentation looks good. Instead of three, we can split it into two, list of Chief Ministers before and after Tamil Nadu was named. Cos, the info before it was named so, will remain static without much change. The info on CMs of Tamil Nadu will continue to increase over the next 20 or even 50 yrs for that matter.

And.. The light blue color representation of Congress looks somewhat weird. Can we use some other color? It would be great we could decide on one color for every national party and use them consistently in wikipedia. Plus, the font size in the graphical timelines look too small and cramped. The light blue color was already standardized and used in many articles. You can find standard party colors at Category:Party colours templates (India). We should use those so all articles have consistent look and feel. I have increased font size on the timeline per your request. I am waiting for more people to comment on the split up. Suppose we create a List of Mayors of Mumbai. Should that include the List of Mayors of Bombay, or should these be separate articles? I'd assume most would say there should be only one of them. IMHO similarly List of CMs of Madras State and List of CMs of Tamil Nadu should be the same article, Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu in just the same way Bombay was renamed Mumbai. The carving out of territories into other states happened separately. In fact it might be similarly debatable whether we should have separate articles for Madras State, Andhra State, etc. — Bombay is just a redirect to Mumbai. -- Paddu 15:58, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Vertical timeline

What is the purpose of the vertical timeline? Isn't it redundant with the 3 timelines before that? List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom (graphical) and List of popes (graphical) both don't have it. -- Paddu 19:15, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

They have it at Template:Timeline UK Prime Ministers. In the List of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom article, the graphical lists are seperate pages and linked from the Timline seection. I was planning to do the same, but since this article is short, just added the graphical list to list itself. With regards to purpose, it gives a different view, and also shows major events such as indenpedence, creation of madras state, universal suffrage. Chittoor and Chingelput districts

Currently, Chittoor district is in Andhra Pradesh, and Tiruvallur & Kanchipuram districts (parts of erstwhile Chengalpattu/Chingelput district) are in Tamilnadu. Hence, I wonder if what the article says the inverse of the actual situation regarding reorganisation of these districts. -- Paddu 21:25, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Citation for Kurma Naidu

The closest I could get to was here. It reads, "In 1937, Justice Party that was in power in the then Madras Province from 1921, except for a brief period, lost the elections to the Congress Party.". The brief period of time could be that of P. Subbarayan (assumption of mine). I think Justice party that was in power in 1937 was defeated in the july elections and Congress took over (more assumptions of mine). There is no direct reference to this person. Lead Section

Serious issue

Later, on April 1, 1960, territories comprising of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh were transferred to Madras State in exchange of territories from the Chingelput and Salem District.

Chittoor was exchanged with whom? Because currently Chittoor is in Andhra and "Salem and Chengalpattu" are with TN. I notice that the same statement is made in the referred TN Assembly site as well. We need to confirm if this was not a mistake. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 12:12, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

I have added another reference. Entire Chittoor district was not transferred. Only two taluks from it. And the same with Madras State. Only some territories were transferred to Andhra State. I thought there was no overlap problem with the monobook skin at all. I use firefox at 1024x768 with a sidebar opened so the page width is 819. With this there is overlap between the Madras Presidency maps and the table in the classic skin. This is what I tried to correct by putting the maps side by side. The edits after [1] made no difference though, so they can be reverted if required. It's also OK with me if you feel we need not support my peculiar configuration (BTW I'll be getting a new monitor so even I may not notice this problem in future ;^)). -- Paddu 16:25, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

I came across this link. You need to scroll or search for Tamil Nadu. I found the following:

  • It does not list Madras Presidency.(Ignore...good to be comprehensive)
  • It shows the date of creation of Madras State (26 January 1950).(Mentioned now.)
  • It shows the date of the rename of Madras State to Tamil Nadu (14 January 1969). (Mentioned now.)
  • It says V.R. Nedunchezhiyan followed Annadurai. (Mentioned now.)
  • It says Karunanidhi's current term is his 4th term (Ignore per comment below.)
  • It shows President's rule dates.(Mentioned now.)

    • We can use the President's rule dates.
    • Nedunchezhiyan's terms must be mentioned. (Mentioned now.) Though in acting capacity, it's almost as relevant as Janaki's term. I was not aware of this interesting fact.
    • The site mentions this as Karunanidhi's fourth term because it has merged two successive terms from 1969-1976 into one. Let's ignore that.
    • The dates need to be cross-checked. The official TN SEcretariat reference is, by definition, more authoritative.

colors

the colors for DMK are mixed up with congress' blue. in the chronological list for instance DMK candidates are given blue while the legend says red for dmk. can someone who coded the colors correct it? Idleguy 09:32, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

MGR's term

As of 2006 M.Karunanidhi is the longest served CM of Tamil Nadu(14 years), MGR served lessthan 10 years only, so we should correct this. Rajan 11:59, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Records

I have reverted the addition of the Karunanidhi as the longest served chief minister. The longest served here means length of time in successive tenures (without breaks). Karunanidhi holds the record of having been the chief minister the maximum number of times (which is included).

I went to www.tn.gov.in, but it not find a mention that the images are released to public for free-use. Can you please point me to a specific page on that website that says so? Our experience has been that Indian government website content is copyrighted and cannot be used here. We are not able to use politician images from Lok Sabha website for the same reason. If some image is present in Tamil Nadu Government site, that means it is for public information and use, so to explain about the CM of TN, we can use this image from www.tn.gov.in. Your understanding is wrong. The images posted on a website are not automatically free-use. The copyright owner must explicitly state that the images can be used freely (including commericial use). The meaning of a press release is that an organisation is calling a press conference or sending out information to convey their side of the story. It does not mean that what they are published can be reprinted as news verbatim or as photos. Tamil Wiki and English Wiki have different fair-use policies. Some language wikis do not allow fair use images. It was a recent change in English wiki policy that added these restrictions on fairuse images. I believe the same should apply in Tamil Wiki. But they are slow in catching up. Table format change

While I appreciate the effort to move to the new format, I had to revert the large scale change. Few reasons why:

  1. Traffic: I would wait for few more weeks before we go that route. The page is getting 2k visits right now. Let us wait until traffic slows down.
  2. Format: The new format was confusing to me. I would be okay to include some elements into this page. Let us keep the format simple.
  3. Sandbox: It would be ideal if the changes were done on sandbox first. The change must be applied to all the sections, not just the TN one.

Hey Ganesh, thanks for the input. I see that you have worked hard on this page. I really do feel that we need to transition over to the new format for a few reasons.
  1. First, there is actually no place on wikipedia where we can find information on accomplishments for each administration, except on election pages. For individuals coming in to see summary of accomplishments, I want this page to be the best place to start.
  2. Second, I like the fact that you want to keep the format simple, but the trade off is too little information. Many other wiki pages of list of head of government has a similar format to the new format. In terms of the high visit rate, I feel this is the best time to have the new format out so more people can edit and add description to make the table better.
  3. Third, I actually feel the current table is a little bit confusing since the number before the Chief minister refers to the term and not if he/she was the 1st CM, 2nd CM etc. Also it has no information on whether the CM is a MLA or nominated. Also some clarifications are missing, e.g. why did Jayalalithaa in 2001 only serve for a few months and why Presidents rule were initiated in different points in time. The new format does justice to all the above mentioned and more and still being succinct.
Please elaborate on why you feel the new table is confusing. In terms of applying it to all sections, I will work on it, but working at it a state at a time (especially ones that receive a lot of traffic) can get more people to work on the other states. The new format is what is most used in parliamentary forms of government, the current table I feel is more appropriate for head of state more than head of government. I would like input from others also, lets try to resolve this, so we can get a table template that can be applied to all states.--Nader85021 (talk) 18:19, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Madras State

@Articist: Madras State is different from the present Day Tamil Nadu. Please read the Madras State article. You've merged both the tables into one without edit summaries. The article stayed liked this for years apart from the recent split I did. I'm reverting this to an older version. Please discuss here if you have any concerns. SUN EYE 1 16:41, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

@SUN EYE 1: Yeah! I am completely aware of that Madras State is different from present day Tamil Nadu. But the fact is the election conducted at 1952 was the first legislative assembly election of the state, which happened parallel to 1st Lok Sabha election. Though C. Rajagopalachari would be the first chief minister right. so what, I made such a changes. Whereas, only the name of the state was renamed but the government mentioned for C. N. Annadurai is same. I followed it by referring the article "List of chief ministers of Odisha" which the state renamed from Orissa to Odisha but the list of chief ministers remained the same. Articist, The boundaries were different in the Madras State until 1956 and this notion has stayed like this for years and we need extensive WP:CONSENSUS to change this. I'm thinking of a WP:BOLD Splitting, although WP:SPLIT needs discussion, this seems to have a good rationale for a Split. Also, Please don't remove references like you did here, we need references wherever possible per WP:V or do you have a single reference for the entire table, if not please restore it. First Chief Minister

The first Chief minister of Tamil Nadu is A Subbarayalu as per the Tamil Nadu Government website Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu since 1920. The Chief Minister or rather Prime Ministers of Madras Presidency are considered as part of Tamil Nadu.The entire Tamil Nadu state was part of Madras Presidency except Kanyakumari which was part of Travancore. Just as List of chief ministers of Punjab lists all of them.Similar is the case in Bengal and Assam.No WP:RS lists Rajaji as the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 09:33, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Pharaoh of the Wizards, This was the version after the split. The split was made because Madras presidency included parts of many states extending up to Odisha. After the elections, the article was heavily edited and the section about Madras state was merged with Tamil Nadu by other editors. You are right, most lists for Chief ministers in the internet includes CMs from madras presidency and Madras state as part of Tamil Nadu. I'm okay with merging List of chief ministers of Madras Presidency, are you suggesting the same? SUN EYE 1 18:22, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
Yes do feel List of chief ministers of Madras Presidency needs to be merged. That was the version right from 2004 to about Dec 2020 and this is a Featured list .Tamil Nadu government and most WP:RS sources see Tamil Nadu as the successor to Madras Presidency just as Bombay to Bombay Presidency.
