Article exposed bug/limitation in Mediawiki[edit]

This article is so big and so well referenced that its sheer sizes exposes a bug and/or limitation in the Mediawiki software that runs Wikipedia. The effect of this bug is that the reference list and navbox templates at the end of the article are not shown.

Rather than wait for a fix, which may not appear, I think it better to take a more proactive approach by shortening the article. I have two suggestions:

  1. I did some experiments and by removing North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset sections the references and navbox templates work. This is a logical split and the contents can still be linked to using the {{main}} template to link to the appropriate articles.
  2. We could make each district's parishes a template in their own right thus reducing the overall size of this article and having the added bonus of reducing duplication by including the templates both in this article and the relevant district article. For example, the North Somerset section of this article is largely duplicated in the list of parishes contained in the main North Somerset article. If a template were used then both could access the same content with no duplication. Edits to the template would be reflected in both articles.

This sounds a helpful approach, although I don't know enough about how a template would work to be sure. On List of abbeys and priories in England each county is added using "include" & "noinclude" labels but a common key. If this is to be done we need to check whether the district list or county list is most recent/comprehensive. I know that the references (for population of 5 districts) links were changed when Somerset County Council removed the lists from their web cite - but I'm not sure I managed to replace them all.— Rod talk 18:23, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also a bit baffled by why this particular page has blown the softwear. There appears to be no problem at List of civil parishes in Cheshire (although that isn't quite as large). There may be other ways of reducing the size. Is it perhaps the co-ordinates that are causing the problem? The population figures are probably best cited to Office for National Statistics : Census 2001 : Parish Headcounts : Bath and North East Somerset etc. Skinsmoke (talk) 02:29, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
