Ranking of countries[edit]

How should the ranking of the countries in the list be determined? I don't understand the question. Presumably they should be ranked by quantity of foreign exchange reserves, right? What is the alternative? —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 19:35, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I my question is, in the list the ranks are set along with an increase, steady and decrease icons. How would one verify them (not the numbers, nor the changes, but just the ranks and the rank icons)? If I change, say Singapore from a steady icon to a decrease icon, without changing the rank, it would mean that Singapore fell one rank, which is incorrect as I didn't change the rank. In a traditional sense, one just looks up the citation and verify the statements. But I feel that it's not possible in this list. I don't know what could be an alternative, but I am looking for suggestions. — DaxServer (talk to me) 20:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how we can verify them, or even what they mean, given the variation in months, and would be happy with their removal. The rank would also be far easier to maintain if the ranks were automatically generated, such as on List of chess grandmasters. Greenman (talk) 08:45, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Greenman. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 18:51, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The ranking is updated and protected aggressively every time the figures are updated. Even if the column is removed, it will be restored the next day and just will end up in an edit war :/ Any solutions to not get into this? — DaxServer (talk) 07:38, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll call for an RfC — DaxServer (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
updated a new format. Ranking is no more included. Users are supposed to sort the columns for get the ranking, if required. Makks2010 (talk) 09:05, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RfC: Ranking of countries[edit]

How should Wikipedia report and maintain the ranking of the countries/entities in the list? — DaxServer (talk) 21:19, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proposals[edit]

  1. Keep the current state
  2. Remove ranking numbers and icons
  3. Remove ranking icons, but keep ranking numbers (manually incremented)
  4. Remove ranking icons, but keep ranking numbers (auto incremented using Template:Static row numbers)

Proposals added after comment from North8000DaxServer (talk) 06:43, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@North8000 : hope, new correction makes some sense now. Instead of ranking, user should sort the data to get the ranking. Makks2010 (talk) 08:49, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

(Invited by the bot) You aren't going to get much feedback on this. You are asking respondents to come up with ideas without proposing any. North8000 (talk) 02:28, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(invited by the bot) The current state looks good to me. The alternates all appear to involve removing something. North8000 (talk) 14:05, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The current state involves changing the ranks and the rank icons on a weekly/monthly/regular basis depending on the frequency of the availability of new numbers. The rank icons convey if the rank was changed or stable itself, and that needs to be verified based on the past data.
There are also questions as to what the rank icons convey: are they compared against the last release of the same country, or compared to another country it surpassed with the new numbers; since how long did the country maintain the said position; some countries don't have data for years and there is nothing one can do. For sure, we can only work with what was published, just like everything else on WP.
To me this seems more of a job of a data scientist, and not that of a WP editor. But if there is agreement here to keep it as it is, I've no problem with that but if one wants to do verify them, it might become cumbersome. I'm also open for new suggestions (as you already know I added the proposals section after your first comment.) — DaxServer (talk) 16:30, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your comments, I struck my post. I decided that I was not deep in enough to intelligently comment on this.North8000 (talk) 18:08, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Option 4: The current state is clearly unsatisfactory, as the icons are meaningless given the range of dates for the data. Template:Static row numbers is the most low-maintenance alternative, as manually updating rankings is tedious and error-prone. Greenman (talk) 14:17, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Option 4. As noted in the discussion above, the ranking icons do not seem to be meaningful, as the figures are for different dates. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 05:28, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of "Unallocated Reserves"[edit]

The currency composition table has a row for "Unallocated Reserves", but no explanation on what this actually means.

Can anyone clarify? And ideally provide a source to include it in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theduke (talkcontribs) 00:36, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

tooltip added for 'unallocated reserves'. Makks2010 (talk) 05:44, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The source link for "International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity" from IMF is incorrect[edit]

Someone replaced source number [25], "International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity" from data.imf.org, with an incorrect source. It all started from here:

The original correct link is https://data.imf.org/regular.aspx?key=61280813

Change column[edit]

The figures in the Change column are insufficiently defined, and I suspect that they are neither meaningful nor comparable. I suggest that this column is deleted. Ehrenkater (talk) 19:43, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ehrenkater tooltip updated for the Change column, hope it will convey some meaning now. Makks2010 (talk) 08:47, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Something is wrong with the table[edit]

💀 103.76.45.145 (talk) 05:53, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Table needs to be corrected[edit]

The rankings are one number out of order from 4th place onwards. The US was listed as 4th place without any figure listed, and the reference for its row was for India's reserves. The reference for India's reserves are of the next country, Russia's reserves, and Russia's reference is for Taiwan's and so on for the rest. I deleted the row for the US since neither a forex figure was shown, nor does it make much sense to include the US in this list since it's about holding dollars as a foreign currency.

I'm not experienced enough in editing tables on wiki, so it would be great if someone can bring the rankings back to order as well as have the references in the correct rows. Financeguy214 (talk) 00:51, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Financeguy214 : Forex reserve doesn't mean only USD. The  United States holds reserves in other currencies like European UnionEUR, JapanJPY, United KingdomGBP, IndiaINR, CanadaCAD, ChinaRMB, AustraliaAUD, & SwitzerlandCHF. However while comparing reserves of different countries, all the data must be brought at same level, hence values were converted into USD. This is universally accepted practice.
